Bittersweet.

That’s the only word for yesterday’s final visit with Coco before her big move south. ❤️

There may have been a few extra snuggles involved.

When we first met months ago, anxiety had taken the driver’s seat. Big feelings, big worries and a move on the horizon that felt almost impossible to navagate. Coco’s anxiety was running the household, and what should have been an exciting new adventure felt overwhelming for everyone involved.

Fast forward to today, and Coco is heading into her next chapter with something far more valuable than perfect behaviour: confidence.

She has skills.
She has coping strategies.
She knows how to work through hard moments instead of getting stuck in them. When her brain starts spinning stories and convincing her the sky is falling, she now has tools she can fall back on.

Will there still be bumps along the way? Of course. That’s life.

But now she has a foundation.
She has a family that understands her, and she has the confidence to take on new adventures.

That’s the real win.

Watching dogs grow is one of my favourite parts of this job. Watching them leave the nest and take those skills into the real world? That’s the part that gets me every time.

The silver lining? I know she’s heading into great hands. Her next trainer is someone I went to school with, which makes this transition feel a whole lot easier. There’s something really special about being able to pass a dog along knowing their next adventure will be guided by someone you trust completely.

And honestly, what a next adventure it is.

Sports training is in Coco’s future, and I can’t wait to watch this girl discover just how capable she really is.

Safe travels, Coco. ❤️🐾

We’ll miss you, but we have a feeling your biggest adventures are still ahead!

Hercules arrived to training with:
One ear up
One ear down
His own training plan
And unlimited confidence!

Iconic behaviour.
But underneath the cute little Yorkie face is one of the MOST common puppy struggles we see, puppies who get SO excited they completely lose the ability to think.

And that usually shows up as:
Land shark attacks
Launching at faces
Grabbing clothes
Biting because “THIS IS THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE!!!”

Meanwhile the humans are sitting there questioning every life choice they’ve ever made

The hard part is many of these behaviours ARE normal puppy behaviours.
But “normal” doesn’t always mean “something they automatically grow out of.”
Because size changes fast.
One day it’s a tiny puppy dangling from your sleeve like an adorable little goblin…and before you know it you’ve got a much larger adolescent dog with the exact same coping skills, impulse control, and emotional regulation.

That’s why we focus on more than just obedience both in class and during in home private sessions.

Before we worry about perfect sits or fancy tricks, we focus on helping dogs learn HOW to:
✨ Calm their bodies
✨ Think through excitement
✨ Disengage appropriately
✨ Settle
✨ Focus around distractions
Because once the brain is calm enough to learn?
That’s when the magic happens.

Hercules is currently working hard on his boundary homework and learning that excitement doesn’t always need to become chaos.

This little guy is SMART. We have a feeling he’s going to keep us on our toes, and we can’t wait to see what he comes up with next.

Obedience matters… but so does the fun stuff

Yes—we want the recall.
The loose leash.
The “please don’t launch at guests” skills.

But tricks?
That’s where the magic happens.

This started as wanting to teach a leg weave

Zara said:
✨ “What if I added a jump?”

And honestly? She’s part kangaroo… so we rolled with it.

Now it’s a trick we built together
Not just trained, but created.

Because the best moments?
They come from listening to your dog, not just directing them.

Bonus: This is real mental enrichment.
A few minutes of this = a tired, happy brain.

Train the life skills.
But don’t skip the part where you get to laugh together

The bittersweet “I’m home” moment.

I’ve worked with rescue dogs as a front liner, foster, and adopter for 10+ years…so when I say this, I say it with love:

That “perfect” dog you just brought home?

You’re still in the meeting stage.

A stage can last days…sometimes even a couple of months. Think of it like dating—you’re both feeling things out, learning boundaries, figuring out what’s safe.

At first, they’re quiet. Polite. Easy.
It feels like everything just…clicked.

But that’s not the full picture.

They’re observing. Settling. Taking it all in.

And then…a shift happens.

Counters suddenly seem more interesting
Food becomes a full contact sport
Walks get a little…spicy

And it can feel like it came out of nowhere.

It didn’t.

They didn’t flip.
They got comfortable.

They’ve realized they’re safe.
This is home.
They belong here.

With that safety comes confidence.
And with confidence…comes experimentation 👀

New behaviours. New choices. New ideas.

Not because they’re “bad”—but because their brain is finally free to do more than just cope.

They’re no longer focused on survival or trying to understand their environment.

So now what?

They’ve got all this extra brain power with no clear direction on where it should go.

That’s when dogs start creating their own entertainment. (Which rarely aligns with what we had in mind 😳)

We’ve been taught that a tired dog is a good dog; so we walk more, play longer, try to physically wear them out.

But here’s the piece most people miss:

A physically tired dog can still make questionable choices.
A mentally fulfilled dog? Much less interested.

Licking. Foraging. Puzzles. Training games.
These aren’t just “extras”—they’re outlets.

(We’ve included one of our favourite brain game guides here if you want a place to start 👇)

And if you really want to channel that brain power?
Clicker training is one of the most effective and fun ways to do it.

What’s your dog’s go-to for mental stimulation right now?

Or are you in the thick of the “they’ve settled in and found their personality” phase? 😏

Pick your player: Dog Training Edition

Let’s be honest…
Not every human (or dog) learns the same way

✨ Want hands-on coaching and real-life practice?
That’s your Private Training Package moment.

✨ Busy life, but still want consistency + support?
Say hello to the Monthly Subscription—we’re basically part of your routine now.

✨ Want a jump-start with professional handling?
That’s where Day Training / Board & Train steps in.

Here’s the thing though—
🚫 There is no “best” option.
✔️ There’s only what works best for you and your dog.

And that’s exactly what we figure out together.

Because good training isn’t one-size-fits-all…
it’s naturally fluent. 😉

Your dog isn’t ‘too much.’”
They just haven’t been shown what to do with all that energy.

You know that feeling when a complete stranger runs up and hugs you in the grocery store?
Sweet intention…
Overwhelming delivery.

That’s Happy.

Everyone is her best friend.
Immediately.

Full body wiggles.
Zero hesitation.
Occasional air time.
Second chance at life and she is living it up.

So no, we didn’t shut it down.
We shaped it.
Calm approaches rewarded
The calmer she was, the better the reward.

When her brain started to bubble over?
We didn’t correct it.

We paused.

Let her grab a toy.
Let her play.
Let her reset.

Because play isn’t the problem
It’s part of the solution.

And just like that…

The dog who would’ve launched herself at you, started choosing a different way to say hello.

Still happy.
Still excited.
Just a little more… polite about it

If your dog is “a bit much”, don’t shut it down.
Show them where it goes.

Happy is available with Pawsitive Paws Rescue Ltd.
and looking for her people to adopt her.
(Wiggles included. Personal space not guaranteed.)

Your recall isn’t broken.
Your dog just has better options.

You can walk a dog for an hour, tire their body out, and still have a dog that ignores you.

Because tired doesn’t equal engaged.
And it definitely doesn’t equal motivated.

I spent some time with Koa
(aka Old Man, self-appointed decision maker, gentleman energy, independent options).

Fresh off a walk. Legs a little slower.
Nose? Still fully committed to the job.

Call him once?
Maybe.

Call him when something better is happening?
Let’s be realistic.

We didn’t get louder.
Didn’t repeat cues.
Didn’t make it “stricter.”

We made it worth it.

Stick close → Good stuff happens
Check in → Even better stuff happens
Choose the human → Best deal in town

And just like that…
The dog who “wasn’t listening”, started making better choices.

Not because he had to.
Because he wanted to.

When the world gets interesting,
Real training happens.

Koa, living proof that you can be a gentleman and have strong opinions. He’s hanging out with Pawsitive Paws Rescue Ltd. while he waits for his forever family to find him.

“I’m sure your training works for some dogs… but mine isn’t food motivated.”

I hear this one a lot.

But here’s the thing:
If you needed a deck built and offered your friends pizza and snacks, you’d probably have a full crew show up. Good environment, full bellies—everyone’s happy to help.

Dogs aren’t so different.
Food is a primary reinforcer. It matters.
So when a dog “isn’t food motivated,” it’s usually one of two things:

🥪 The payment isn’t worth the job
If we’re asking for focus, calm, or hard work but paying in kibble they get for free every day… that’s like offering stale sandwiches for skilled labour.
Sometimes we need to level up the paycheck.

🔥 The brain is already overwhelmed
If your dog is overstimulated, stressed, or “on fire,” food drops way down the priority list.
Think about it—when your world feels chaotic, are you reaching for carrot sticks?
Probably not.

I saw this firsthand on a recent visit with Ruby at Pawsitive Paws Rescue.
Ruby loves the world. Like… LOVES it.
Everything is exciting, everything is important and sometimes the human on the leash gets a little forgotten.

She can offer leash skills… when reminded.
But the real magic?
Happened when we did nothing.
We sat in a snowbank (because thats training in the North ❄️) and just watched the world go by.

No pressure. No asking. Just space.
And slowly,her brain settled.
The world got quieter.
Everything came back into focus.
And suddenly—there it was.
A dog who remembered she loves tuna fudge.
A dog who was ready to learn.

Before we say a dog “isn’t motivated” we need to ask:
👉 Is the reward valuable enough?
👉 Or is the environment too loud for learning?
Motivation doesn’t disappear.
It just gets buried.
