Introducing a queen bee to a queenless colony.

The queen arrived in a plastic queen cage, accompanied by some attendants (worker bees). One end of the cage is filled with fondant. When introduced to a hive, the workers consume the constant over a few days and release their new queen. If all goes well, she’ll be laying 1,500-2,000 eggs per day by mid-week.

Every spring, hundreds of fruit tree growers from across Alberta (and beyond; I met a guy who drove down from Fairbanks, Alaska) meet to trade and buy sticks from their favourite fruit trees. These sticks, called scions, are grafted onto backyard, orchard, and nursery trees.

The number of local apple, plum, pear, and apricot varieties is staggering!

Storage tomatoes are selected for long shelf-lives and can, apparently, sometimes last from harvest to Easter.

Teamwork makes the dream work!

The new nursery is shaping up nicely thanks to the community. Last night, we assembled 28 new air pruning boxes and potted up and labeled tons of little trees including a few oak species, sweet gum, ginkgo, and maples.
