An excellent reminder

With the weather getting crazy hot and we all look for a little refuge, we thought it was a good idea to put out a safety reminder.

Cyanobacteria or Blue / Green algae are a type of bacteria that thrive in warm stagnant waters like lakes and ponds. When conditions are right (like right now) visible blooms can occur very quickly. Usually as a blue/green or red/brown hue on the waters surface. Echo Dale, Reesor, Elkwater, Spruce Coulee and many others get these algae blooms every year.

Cyanobacteria can be very serious or fatal to dogs in a very short amount of time. Especially if ingested while swimming. These toxins can affect the liver and kidney function as well neurological symptoms and skin problems. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, seizures, and even death. Immediate veterinary care is crucial if exposure is suspected.

You can check for advisories on the Alberta website, but don’t take that information as fact as conditions can change very rapidly.

July Update:

I will be away for Mastergroom Canada in Calgary at Spruce Meadows July 25-27. I do have a few spaces available in July as I opened up Fridays for the summer with the kiddos being out of school.

Crystal and I from The Laundromutt will be competing Friday evening in the fun Duo Dual event to kick off the weekend.

Ullr and I will be competing in the Asian Fusion Class Saturday morning.

Jaxx is participating in the double coat seminar as a demo dog on Sunday.

We will be floating around so please come on down if you are in the area and say Hi!

Kennel Cough Season

🐶 Kennel Cough Season is Here – What You Need to Know! 🐾

As the weather warms up and our furry friends are out and about more. Whether it's boarding, grooming, dog parks, or daycare, kennel cough (canine infectious respiratory disease) becomes more common. We have diagnosed two patients just today.

📌 What is Kennel Cough?
Kennel cough is a highly contagious respiratory infection in dogs, similar to a chest cold in humans. It spreads through the air and by contact with contaminated surfaces or other dogs.

⚠️ Symptoms to Watch For:
• A persistent, dry, honking cough
• Sneezing or nasal discharge
• Lethargy or mild fever
• Loss of appetite in some cases

💉 Prevention is Key!
• Keep your dog up to date on their Bordetella vaccine, especially if they are a senior or a flat-faced breed
• Avoid contact with dogs showing symptoms
• If your dog is coughing, leave them at home. Help others in not spreading the infection

🤒 If your dog is coughing, please give us a call before bringing them in, we can help guide you safely and prevent spreading illness to others.

Let’s keep our pets healthy and happy this season! 🐾
Have questions or need to book a vaccine? Send us a message or give us a call. We're here to help!

Terminology Tuesday ~ Ladder of Canine Aggression

Understanding your dog’s body language is key to preventing bites before behaviors escalate!

The Canine Ladder of Aggression (created by Kendal Shepherd) shows how dogs signal discomfort long before they ever growl or bite.

Recognizing the early signs—like turning their head, yawning, or walking away—can help keep everyone safe and stress-free!

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post on how pain can impact our dog’s behavior!
