I had the pleasure of meeting Stormy yesterday!! She is a total love bug, she greeted me gently (no jumping) and melted into my legs for a few minutes of pets then quickly felt comfortable to lay on the floor and ask for belly rubs 🥰

She seemed fine with other dogs and cats within her sight. Honestly she just wanted to be around people, and soak up the love. 💕

🐾 SPRING SAFETY REMINDER 🐾

As we enjoy these beautiful spring days with our dogs, remember that this is baby season for local wildlife! Mama bears 🐻, coyotes 🐺, foxes 🦊, deer 🦌 and even birds 🦅 are fiercely protective of their young right now.

Keep your pups safe with these tips:
• Stick to well-traveled trails and avoid dense brush or secluded areas
• Try a new route if you know there are animals on your usual path
• Keep your eyes and ears open for signs of wildlife - put those earphones and phone away
• Keep dogs leashed - even the most obedient dog can be tempted to investigate
• Make noise while in wildlife areas so they know you’re coming
• Carry a flashlight during dawn/dusk walks when many animals are active
• Never approach baby animals - mom is likely nearby and watching
• Never feed wildlife
• If you encounter wildlife, back away slowly, make yourself appear large, and give them plenty of space

Wildlife are protective parents, just like we are. A little extra caution goes a long way in keeping both our beloved dogs and wild families safe.

🐾 Gunners Sunday Shenanigans 🐾

👉You think your puppy is high energy. They are not. They are over-tired.

👉You try to tire them out, with longer walks, and more play, and it just gets worse.

👉Here is why. The exhaustion trap.

When a puppy stays awake too long, stress hormones (cortisol) build up. Those hormones do not make them sleepy. They make them wired, hyper and bitey.
So you add more exercise, and guess what that does? It raises cortisol even more. Now you have a puppy who looks like they need a marathon but actually needs a nap.

You are not tiring them out, you are building an endurance athlete.

The zoomie lie. Zoomies look like fun. Wild running, spinning, biting the air. 🌪️

That is not play. That is a stress release, a nervous system short-circuiting. Your puppy is not having fun. They are dysregulated.

What they need is a quiet space. Darkness, no stimulation, twenty minutes of sleep.

The bite pressure clue. When over-tired, the part of their brain that controls impulse shuts down. The mouth gets harder, they are not being bad, they cannot help it.

If your puppy’s biting gets worse as the day goes on, that is not aggression, that is exhaustion.

The settling problem. Their body is exhausted and their brain will not stop. They want to sleep but cannot get there alone, they pace, they pant, they whine.

They need you to enforce the nap. Put them in a quiet space. No words. No eye contact. Let them figure it out with you nearby.

The test. Tomorrow, when your puppy goes crazy, do not add a walk. Add a nap. Twenty minutes.

👀 Watch what happens.

The truth: Most “high energy” puppies are just over-tired. A 20-minute nap changes everything.

💤 Nap first. Train later.

🚨 First Aid Friday 🚨

Let's chat about heat stroke.

Most people think heat stroke is only a midsummer problem.

But the reality? Dogs can overheat surprisingly fast in spring—especially during the first warm days of the year.

Why?

Because neither dogs nor owners are acclimated to the heat yet.

A temperature that feels “nice” to us can still become dangerous for a dog during:

Walks
Outdoor play
Car rides
Hiking
Yard time

⚠️ Dogs at Higher Risk

Some dogs struggle with heat much faster than others.

🚨 Higher-risk dogs include:
-Flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds (Bulldogs, Pugs, French Bulldogs)
-Large/giant breeds
-Senior dogs
-Overweight dogs
-Thick-coated breeds
-Dogs with heart or breathing conditions

🌡️ Early Signs of Heat Stress

Catching heat stress EARLY is critical.

Watch for:
-Excessive panting
-Bright red gums or tongue
-Drooling
-Slowing down or refusing to walk
-Seeking shade constantly
-Weakness or lethargy

🚨 Emergency Signs (Heat Stroke)

Heat Stroke is a true emergency. Organ failure can happen quickly.

Signs include:
-Vomiting or diarrhea
-Collapse
-Disorientation
-Trouble breathing
-Pale or gray gums
-Seizures

👉 Heat stroke can become life-threatening VERY quickly.

🚑 First Aid Response

-Move to a cool area immediately
-Begin gradual cooling

Use:

Cool (not ice-cold) water
Wet towels on paws, belly, armpits
Offer small amounts of water

Do not force drinking

IMPORTANT: Seek veterinary care immediately, even if your dog seems to improve

❌ What NOT to Do
Don’t use ice baths
Don’t cover the dog completely with wet towels
Don’t wait “to see if they bounce back

🛑 Prevention Tips

✔ Walk earlier or later in the day
✔ Bring water everywhere
✔ Take breaks often
✔ Know your dog’s limits
✔ NEVER leave dogs in vehicles

As your dog’s first responder, recognizing heat stress early can save their life.

🐾 WILOW’S WISDOM WEDNESDAY 🐾

Today’s lesson:
“Your dog isn’t stubborn… here’s what’s really happening”

— Willow, Golden Retriever; Expert in Not Being “Stubborn” 😏

“Okay… I need to clear something up.

When I don’t listen…
it’s not because I’m stubborn.

It’s because:

👉 I don’t understand what you’re asking
👉 You haven’t practiced it enough (respectfully… that’s on you)
👉 The environment is WAY more interesting than you
👉 Or… your timing is off (see last week’s lesson 👀)

Let’s be honest—
If there’s a squirrel, another dog, AND a smell happening…
you’re competing with a LOT.

💡 Here’s what actually helps:
✔️ Practice in low-distraction environments first
✔️ Make it worth my while (better rewards 👀)
✔️ Be consistent (same cue = same expectation)
✔️ Build focus before expecting obedience

Because when I really understand the game…
I’m all in.

🐾 – Willow, 100% Good Girl

👇 Have you ever called your dog “stubborn”? Be honest 😅

When choosing a trainer it’s important to ask questions about what methods of training they use.

Positive reinforcement and training that meets your dogs needs helps you both build a strong bond. Building behaviour you want. 🐾

Fear based training may escalate the behaviour you don’t want, making it harder to get the results you’re looking for. Causing frustration for you both!!

💫 Gunner’s Sunday Shenanigans 💫

Let’s talk teeth 🦷

Gunner, Golden Retriever, Professional Puppy 🐶

Now that I have all my shiny new big boy teeth, I’m learning about dental care. It’s a fun game using a small stick like thing with bristles and a yummy tasting paste.

I like to alligator 🐊 roll while brushing, this seems to help get into all the spots!!

Why is this important?
👉 removes plaque and tartar
👉 keeps my heart, liver and kidneys healthy
👉 to check for gum and teeth issues

How to teach dental care:
🪥 go slow, let them lick the brush
🪥 next day brush one tooth
🪥 next day brush 2-3
Working your way to full mouth!

✅ Gunner’s favorite natural toothpaste:
2 tbsp Coconut oil
2 tbsp Baking Soda
200mg Pomegranate Extract
Pour liquid coconut into a glass container, mix in baking soda and pomegranate mix well. Seal jar with lid.

💫 Pro tip from me….
Brush daily or every 2-3 days for best dental health.

🐾 Happy brushing puppers-Gunner

⚠️ Signs of Toxicity:

Vomiting
Diarrhea
Drooling
Weakness

Severe:

Tremors
Seizures
Liver failure signs (later stages)

🚑 First Aid Response

1️⃣ Remove access immediately
2️⃣ Take a photo of the mushroom (if available) (Helps with identification)
3️⃣ Do NOT wait for symptoms
4️⃣ Contact a veterinarian immediately

Ok who can relate? I’m sure I’m not the only one that spoils my dogs!! 🤔
