Not all skin lesions in cats look the same—and not all of them are straightforward.

This is a case of eosinophilic granuloma complex (EGC), a group of inflammatory skin conditions that show up when a cat’s immune system overreacts, most commonly in response to allergens.

Under the microscope, these lesions are driven by eosinophils, which are a type of white blood cell involved in allergic responses.

In the skin, that reaction can appear as raised nodules, ulcerated areas, or inflamed plaques depending on the location and severity.

While the appearance can vary, one thing is consistent: EGC is very often linked to underlying hypersensitivity, including flea allergy, food reactions, or environmental allergens 🌿

Because of that, treatment isn’t just about the visible lesion. It often involves identifying and managing what triggered the immune response in the first place.

Some cases resolve with targeted therapy, while others require ongoing management to reduce flare-ups and keep the skin comfortable.

Sometimes what looks like ā€œjust irritated skinā€ is actually a chain reaction happening under the surface.

In dogs, the skin is constantly balancing bacteria, moisture, and immune defenses.
When something disrupts that balance—like allergies—the skin barrier weakens.

That’s when bacteria that normally live harmlessly on the skin can take advantage and cause infection.

That condition is called pyoderma.

What we often see in clinic isn’t just the infection itself, but the cycle that leads to it: itch → inflammation → broken skin barrier → infection → more irritation.

This is why treating pyoderma isn’t just about clearing the bacteria—it’s also about asking why the skin became vulnerable in the first place.

Allergies are one of the most common underlying factors we investigate, especially in cases that keep coming back.

This itchy pup came to us last year with back sensitivity. Check out what was hiding under the surface. He has since been treated and doing very well

Hot spots can show up quickly and they can get uncomfortable fast for dogs.

Also known as acute moist dermatitis, hot spots are red, inflamed areas of skin that often develop when irritation leads to a cycle of itching, licking, and further inflammation.

Common triggers can include allergies, moisture trapped in the coat, parasites, or underlying skin or ear issues.

This video features a hot spot on one of our patients.

It’s a great reminder that skin issues like this can happen suddenly and benefit from early attention.

If you notice your dog:
🐾 Excessive licking or chewing at one spot
🐾 Red, moist, or irritated skin
🐾 Sudden hair loss or discomfort …it’s best to have them checked sooner rather than later.
