Know Your Groomer’s Scope

A quick reminder for pet owners:

🦷 Groomers can: brush teeth and provide basic oral-hygiene education.

🚫 Groomers should not: scale, scrape or polish tartar from a pet’s teeth.

According to veterinary guidance, dental scaling is a veterinary procedure and should be performed by appropriately trained veterinary personnel in a clinical setting.

We believe knowing where our professional boundaries end is an important part of being a responsible pet professional.

When in doubt, refer to your veterinarian.

The AAHA dental guidelines specifically state that groomers should never scale a pet’s teeth and that scaling should be performed by trained veterinary personnel with the animal anesthetized.
