While many snowbirds have already traded winter coats for sandy beaches, this is the time of year when families and professionals start planning their own winter getaways. Whether it is a few weeks in Mexico or a much-needed escape somewhere warmer, winter travel often means leaving your home behind during the coldest months of the year.

If you are travelling between now and spring, we would love for you to keep Acuity Advantage in mind. Our Home Watch services help ensure your home is checked regularly, potential issues are caught early, and everything is looked after while you are away. Home Watch Services are available to those in Calgary and the surrounding area, Red Deer County and Whitehorse. Learn More: https://acuityadvantage.com/home-watch-services/

If you're in Calgary, specifically, and heading out while repairs or maintenance are still on your to-do list, our Handyman Services can take care of those details while you are gone, so you can come home to one less thing to worry about. Winter travel should be about warmth, rest, and enjoying your time away... not wondering what is happening back home. We are here to help provide peace of mind while you enjoy your time away.

We feel the need to share some heartbreaking news out of California that two of our clients have recently brought to our attention. Multiple dogs in the San Francisco area became critically ill, and two died, after being left with a dog sitter found through a popular pet-sitting app — one that many pet owners across Canada also use. There is now an ongoing police investigation into the situation as a potential animal abuse matter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wkr89ZJ_aCo

What makes this especially troubling is that the sitter appeared approved and trustworthy. It was only after the fact that the dogs’ owners connected with one another on Reddit and realized their pets had all been left in the care of the same individual, and that their dogs had all been neglected and abused. Situations like this are a difficult reminder that when you leave your pets behind, who you trust matters deeply. Animals cannot advocate for themselves. They rely entirely on the care, attention, and experience of the person responsible for them.

At Acuity Advantage, our nationwide pet care is never treated casually. We are licensed and bonded, work with all types of in-home and farm animals, and take the responsibility of caring for pets seriously. We believe pets are family, and they are treated with the same level of care, consistency, and respect we would expect for our own. If you are in need dependable care for your pets, choosing an experienced and accountable provider can make all the difference. A unfortunate situation in Quebec recently showed how quickly things can go wrong when a home is left unchecked. A vacant unit had its heat turned off, pipes froze, and the result was serious water and ice damage throughout the property. You can see just how bad it was here: https://youtu.be/AxFMYKVpvic?si=CrIYfiEvtfzO_AS0

This is not a rare or one-off risk. It can happen to landlords with short- or long-term rentals, realtors managing vacant listings, or homeowners who are away during the winter. When temperatures drop, homes really do need eyes on them.

That is where Acuity Advantage comes in. Our Home Watch services help ensure vacant and rental properties are checked regularly, potential issues are caught early, and nothing is left to chance. Learn more about Home Watch here: https://acuityadvantage.com/home-watch-services/

In case you've ever considered it: turning heat off to save money is not worth the risk. Whether it's your home and you're travelling your second home, a rental you're in between tenants with. Frozen pipes and water damage can create far more problems than the savings ever justify.

Happy New Year and Welcome to 2026!

We are stepping into the new year with intention and a continued commitment to doing the work well. Not by chasing trends or shortcuts, but by staying grounded in the standards and values that guide how we show up for our clients.

Here are a few of our New Year’s resolutions at Acuity Advantage:

- Continue raising the bar on care. Whether we are providing Home Watch, Lifestyle and Concierge services, Handyman support, Farm and Ranch oversight, or Pet Care, our focus remains on consistent, thoughtful service that treats every home, property, and responsibility as if it were our own.

- Stay proactive, not reactive. Identifying potential issues early, communicating clearly, and helping clients avoid problems before they start will always be a priority.

- Be reliable in the details. Showing up when promised, following through, and maintaining high standards across every service we offer is non-negotiable.

- Strengthen the relationships behind the scenes. We will continue investing in our staff, vendors, and partners, knowing strong relationships are what make dependable service possible.

- Keep earning trust, one visit at a time. Trust is built through consistency, transparency, and care, and we are committed to earning it every day.

We appreciate the trust placed in us and the opportunity to keep doing this work well. We look forward to another year of care, consistency, and accountability. What are your New Year's Resolutions? We would love to hear what you're commiting yourself to in 2026.

As the year comes to a close, we want to take a moment to say thank you.

Thank you to the clients who trusted Acuity Advantage this year — whether that meant caring for your home while you were away, helping manage the day-to-day details through our Lifestyle Management services, coordinating maintenance and handyman work, overseeing farms and rural properties, or caring for the animals and pets that matter most to you.

Every service we provide is built on trust, and we are grateful for the confidence you place in us.

Thank you as well to our staff, vendors, and partners. The consistency, care, and professionalism you bring to your work is what makes it possible for us to support our clients the way we do, across homes, properties, and lifestyles.

- IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR TRAVELLERS HEADING TO THE UNITED STATES -

The United States has implemented an entry-exit tracking program for non-U.S. citizens that is already in effect.

As part of this program, Canadians are now required to be photographed when entering and leaving the United States, regardless of age — including infants, children, and elderly travellers. This applies at airports, land borders, and sea borders, even for short or routine trips.

While the broader program includes additional biometric measures for travellers from certain countries, Canadians are currently subject to photography only under existing policy. That said, border officials retain discretion at the time of entry, and travellers may be asked to comply with additional screening requirements if requested.

What Canadians should expect
- Having their photos taken at both entry and exit
- No age exemptions
- Potentially longer processing times

These procedures were implemented as of December 27, 2025. Video Explanation: https://youtu.be/I1clgySv9OU?si=Z0JABbDouwEwiZCT

If you are travelling to, or through the United States soon, plan accordingly and allow extra time at the border.

’Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the town,
Homes sat quiet as snow drifted softly down.
Suitcases packed, travel plans underway,
Families heading south or just away for the day.

Thermostats set and doors locked tight,
Lights on their timers, just right for the night.
While owners were travelling, near and far,
Acuity Advantage was on site, just as we are.

From Calgary homes to Red Deer County lanes,
And Whitehorse properties blanketed in white plains,
We checked every space, inside and out,
Listening, observing, without a doubt.

No leaks left unseen, no furnace unchecked,
No packages waiting, no detail neglected.
Plants watered, taps run, reports sent through,
Quiet reassurance when travel is due.

So while Christmas arrives with joy and good cheer,
Know your home is cared for, whether far or near.
Because peace of mind is the gift we provide,
All season long, with you or away by your side.

This holiday season, Acuity Advantage is proud to once again support the Veterans Food Bank.

This donation is a small way of giving back to those who have given so much, and it is made in memory of Sgt. Ross Desmond Stoddart, our leader Sandi’s father, who proudly served 25 years with the Canadian Armed Forces, Armoured Corps.

Donations to the Veterans Food Bank allow them to purchase food and grocery items and distribute nutritious food and hygiene products to Veteran Food Banks across Canada, helping meet the needs of veterans and their families.

If you would like to join us in giving back this season, donations can be made here: https://cavss.ca/donate

We are grateful for the opportunity to support this important work and to honour those who have served.

Client feedback matters to us, and we truly appreciate when people take the time to share their experience.

John worked with Acuity Advantage for close to a year while managing his mom’s home from a distance and meeting insurance inspection requirements. Here is what he shared:

“I made arrangements with Acuity to keep up with insurance requirements after I moved my mom to a retirement home. Sandi in particular was very professional and helped me out several times with non related things like snow removal, lawn cutting, and even recommendations with roof repairs.

I can’t say enough good things about this company and the people running it. I was dealing with it long distance and without their help this would have been so much more of a burden.”

Thank you, John, for trusting Acuity Advantage and for sharing such thoughtful feedback.

A lot of people assume Home Watch is only needed for certain types of homes, but the truth is simple: if your home is empty, it needs attention. Problems can happen in any property, and they often start quietly when no one is around to notice.

Here are just a few types of homes that benefit from regular check-ins:

Condos
Even with secure buildings, leaks, HVAC failures, and plumbing issues can happen behind closed doors.

Townhomes
Shared walls mean one unit’s issue can quickly affect another.

New Builds
New homes still experience settling, ventilation issues, and appliance malfunctions in the first year.

Aging Family Homes
Older systems need more oversight, especially heating, plumbing, and electrical.

Rural Properties
Weather shifts, wildlife activity, and power fluctuations can escalate quickly.

Homes Under Renovation
Trades come and go, materials shift, and work quality needs monitoring.

Homes Between Tenants
Vacant rental properties are vulnerable to unnoticed issues long before the next tenant arrives.

If you are away, even for a short time, your home can benefit from professional oversight. At Acuity Advantage, we provide Home Watch services for homes of all sizes and types across Calgary, Red Deer County, and Whitehorse.
