Attention all void owners. 🖤🐈‍⬛

Today is Black Cat Appreciation Day ...which means the tiny house panthers, shadow creatures, burnt loaves, and mysterious pairs of eyes staring at us from dark hallways finally get the recognition they deserve. 😼

Black cats have a certain je ne sais quoi.

Elegant? Absolutely.
Photogenic? Debatable.
Capable of disappearing completely on a dark blanket? Without question.

But behind all that mystery are some pretty spectacular companions: each with their own quirks, personalities, and very strong opinions. I work with countless black kitties each year, each with their own unique charm 🐈‍⬛

Meet Rupert. 🐾

When I arrive for a new pet sit, I can always tell how nervous the pet parent is by how their animal reacts to me. Rupert is a great example. He's two years old, still very much a teenager, and he barked at me nonstop. His mom kept petting him, trying to soothe him, and eventually put his bark collar on because he just wouldn't stop.

Then something interesting happened. She stepped out, and I came back in. Not one bark. Nothing. They actually kept their distance from me, like they were sizing me up. "Who is this lady?"

Now Rupert and I are completely fine.
Here's what I've learned after years of pet sitting. Our animals pick up on our energy far more than we realize. When we're anxious about leaving them, worried about a stranger in our home, unsure if we can trust this person, our pets feel that. They mirror it right back to us, sometimes as barking, sometimes as anxiety or even aggression.

Cesar Millan says it best. Dogs don't need us to be perfect, they need us to be calm and confident. When I walk into a home, I lead with calm energy first. Not force, not fear.

Just a steady presence.

The animals feel it, and they settle because of it.

So if your pet is anxious around new people, check in with your own energy first. They're probably just reflecting you back.

Meet Henri 🐾

He's one of our sweet senior kitty clients, and he knows exactly what he wants out of life: good food and even better cuddles. Non-negotiables, honestly.

There's something so grounding about senior pets. They've stopped chasing and started savoring. And isn't that the goal for all of us as we get older? Good meals, cozy naps, and the people (or cats) who make us feel safe.

We love getting to be part of Henry's daily comforts, whether it's mealtime, snuggle time, or just keeping him company while his people are away.

Meet Bart 😁 My sister added to her kitty collection by rescuing this cutie.

His owner passed away. I see this a lot and thank goodness for rescues jumping in. It's a reminder to have a plan for your pets if something happens to you.

He was terribly matted and shy. Her other 3 cats showed Bart the way. Within a few weeks and months he is starting to show his sweet and spicy side.

Look at those eyes and his coat is magnificent! We call him a toasty marshmallow.
