Things I Won’t Sugarcoat as a Horse Trainer. 🙃🐴

30 days isn’t going to undo years of bad habits.
I don’t care how talented your trainer is. If they claim they can fix it in 30 days it probably won’t last or there will be other issues that pop up because they were crammed and jammed.

Sometimes you’re the problem.
Sometimes it’s your horse. Sometimes it’s both of you feeding off each other’s bad decisions Either way, somebody has to say it. And I promise I’m not telling you because I enjoy awkward conversations.

The horse comes first.
Not your show schedule, not your expectations, and definitely not the timeline you came up with before your horse was consulted. I’m going to do what’s right for the horse standing in front of me, even if that means taking the scenic route.

Your horse isn’t plotting your downfall.
I know it feels personal when they spook at the same trash can they’ve walked past 437 times, but horses aren’t waking up in the morning brainstorming ways to ruin your day. Sometimes they’re confused, uncomfortable, overwhelmed, or just having a moment. Our job is to figure out which one before assuming they’re being jerks.

My time is valuable too.
I love my clients, their horses, and what I do. But I also have a schedule, a business to run and a barn full of horses that all require my attention. Boundaries and barn policies aren’t personal. They’re how I keep the circus running without actually becoming the circus.

Obedience and understanding aren’t the same thing.
Just because a horse does something doesn’t mean they understand it. I want horses that can think through situations, not horses that are terrified of getting the wrong answer. I’m trying to develop functioning members of society not four legged remote control cars.

Your horse might be in the wrong career.
You can have the fanciest papers, the best breeding, and a pedigree full of champions. That doesn’t mean your horse got the memo. Sometimes your fancy show prospect just wants to wander around the mountains. Sometimes the horse you want to pull out every two weeks and trail ride would rather be in the four walls of the arena. Genetics are great, but personality doesn’t always read the brochure.

More riding doesn’t always mean more progress.
Sometimes the biggest breakthrough happens in 10 minutes. Sometimes I spend an entire session working on something that looks painfully boring. And sometimes we have to revisit kindergarten because apparently standing still and steering are advanced concepts today.

Your horse is allowed to have a personality.
That doesn’t mean they get to run the show but I don’t want to train the character out of them either. I like a horse with a little personality. Clearly… considering I seem to have a talent for collecting the equine equivalent of society’s misfits.

Sometimes the horse you want isn’t the horse you have.
And that’s okay. Not every horse is destined to be a world champion, a kids horse, or your next unicorn. Sometimes you’ve got to stop trying to turn a horse into something it isn’t and start appreciating what it actually is.

I’m not manufacturing progress for social media.
Some days we’re doing fancy things. Other days we’re working on standing still, steering, or remembering that the arena they’ve trained in for two months isn’t suddenly haunted. Not every training session is Instagram worthy.

I’m going to tell you what I actually think.
If I think your horse is sore, overwhelmed, in the wrong program or that you’re contributing to the problem, we’re going to talk about it. You pay me for my knowledge and experience, not to sugar coat the truth just to get more money out of you.

At the end of the day I’m not interested in producing robots, rushing horses through a program, or putting a pretty bow on something that isn’t actually fixed.

I’d rather give you an honest horse than an impressive looking problem.

We’re getting ahead of ourselves here as we’ve had a week FULL of races up north!

A year apart Canadian Barrel Horse Incentive - Calnash Ag, Ponoka AB

THE COMEBACK KING
Tivio’s Magic Man — “Romeo”

Some horses are special. Some horses are once in a lifetime. And then there are the ones who remind you exactly why you fell in love with this sport in the first place.

Romeo, you never cease to amaze me.

After finishing just 0.2 seconds off his 2025 CBHI Canadian Barrel Horse Incentive run, and spending almost the entirety of the 2026 season on the sidelines, our boy came back at the very end of the year with something to prove.

And did he EVER!
Coming back with an 18.2 on his very first run back!

We remember the days when a low 18-second run could win the entire jackpot. Now, we’re competing in a whole new era, where low 16s are setting the standard and the competition continues to reach incredible new heights.

But at 18 years young, our perspective has changed a little.

The times on the clock, the placings, and the wins will always be exciting, but they aren’t what matters most anymore.

Every run is a privilege. Every trip down the alley is a gift. And every time I get to swing a leg over this horse, knowing he’s healthy, sound, happy, and still has the heart to compete, that’s a victory in itself.

We’ve watched the sport evolve, the competition get faster, and the years pass us by. But one thing has never changed … the heart this horse brings to every single run.

At this stage in his career, we’re not chasing the clock nearly as much as we’re cherishing the time we still get to spend running against it.

He stepped back into the arena like he’d never missed a beat, laying down absolutely incredible runs and sweeping the field with the same heart, grit, and determination that have always made him who he is.

Time away didn’t take away his fire. It just made his comeback that much sweeter.

There is something so emotional about trusting the process, giving a horse the time he needs, and watching him come back doing what he loves. No amount of prizes, money, or recognition could ever compare to the feeling of having my boy back underneath me, happy, healthy, and loving every stride.

The comeback will always mean more than the setback.

A tremendous thank you to the incredible team behind this horse:

Coulee Equine, Energy Equine, and Dr. Jess at Alberta Veterinary Center — for helping us keep Romeo healthy, sound, conditioned, and feeling his absolute best. We couldn’t do this without you.

And a heartfelt thank you to our wonderful past and current sponsors who continue to stand behind us …

Your support means more than you know, and we’re incredibly grateful to have you all in our corner.

Romeo, my comeback king.

You owe me absolutely nothing, but you continue to give me everything.

Here’s to every run we thought we might not get, every moment we refused to give up on, and every beautiful reminder that some of the greatest chapters are written after the hardest ones.

We’re not done yet buddy 👏🏻

One Year Apart. A Lifetime of Memories. 🩷✨

Some moments in life mean so much more than the placings, the ribbons, or the times on the clock. Sometimes, the greatest victories are the ones that quietly remind you just how lucky you are to have a horse like we do in your life.

The highlight of our Thanksgiving weekend wasn’t our own runs or accomplishments. It was watching Grace and Sloane dazzle in PINK once again at The Switch Up Futurity, Derby & Open, alongside our trusted senior gentleman, Finn (Hesa Dair), now 26 years young.

Together, Sloane and Finn brought home:

🎀 7th in the 3D — P*e Wee Barrels

🎀 1st in the 1D — P*e Wee Poles

But what those placings don’t tell you is the story behind the little girl holding the reins, and the incredible horse who has given her the confidence to hold them.

For years, Finn was one of our main Open horses. A finished double-ender, a seasoned barrel horse, a competitor, and a horse who gave his whole heart every time we asked him to go to work. When he retired from competition in 2023, we knew he had already given us more than we could ever repay.

Little did we know, his most important job was still waiting for him.

These days, that once-competitive athlete carries our little girl.

The same horse who once knew the pressure of competition, the speed of a barrel run, and the snap of a coil tightening on a steer and the excitement of an arena full of people now understands something entirely different. He knows when to slow down, when to be patient, and when the tiny hands holding his reins need him most.

He has traded chasing the clock for building a little girl’s dreams, and confidence.

And somehow, watching him do that means more than anything he ever accomplished for us.

There is something incredibly emotional about watching a horse who helped shape your own journey turn around and become such an important part of your child’s.

The horse who once carried our dreams is now carrying hers.

Finn has given Sloane every ounce of confidence, patience, security, and safety we could ever ask for. He has taught her to be brave, to trust, to laugh, to try again, and most importantly, to love this sport for all the right reasons.

At 26 years young, he owes us absolutely nothing. Yet he continues to give us everything.

One year apart, and seeing how much this little gal has grown, how her confidence has blossomed, and how these precious memories continue to unfold is something we’ll never take for granted.

Because one day, the ribbons will be tucked away, the photographs will be old, and the little girl in pink won’t be so little anymore.

But she’ll always remember the horse who made her feel like she could do anything.

And we’ll always remember the horse who loved our little girl enough to let her believe it.

Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours.

Here’s to the old horses, the little girls with big dreams, and the once-in-a-lifetime kind of love that makes this life with horses so incredibly special.

We love you, Finn. More than you’ll ever know.

26 & 6 years young 🩷✨
Excuse us, we’ll just be over here crying.
