May is Pet Cancer Awareness Month.
Cancer is estimated to develop in 1 in 4 dogs. After 10 years of age, this increases to 1 in 2. For cats, approximately 1 in 5 will develop cancer in their lifetime.

A few common indicators include:
- Loss of appetite and/or unexplained weight loss
- Abdominal swelling / bloating
- Difficulty breathing, eating or swallowing
- Lumps or bumps that grow larger or change in colour / texture
- Persistent wounds or sores
- Bleeding from the mouth nose, or other orifices
- Ongoing diarrhea and/or vomiting
- Random swelling, heat, pain, or lameness
- Behavioural changes such as hiding, losing interest in their favourite activities, etc.

If you are ever concerned about any symptoms your pet is displaying - please don’t hesitate to reach out to your veterinarian.

Ticks often attach in places pet owners don’t immediately think to check.

Ticks that carry Lyme disease can be found in many outdoor environments, and pets may be exposed during walks, time in the yard, or visits to parks and wooded areas. Because ticks often attach in hidden spots, a quick check after outdoor activity is an important way to help reduce risk.

Focus on areas like around the ears, under the collar, between the toes, under the legs, and near the tail. Finding and removing ticks early can help lower the chance of disease transmission.

If you find a tick or have questions about prevention, speak with your veterinarian about the best protection plan for your pet.

May is Canine Arthritis Awareness Month.
Here are some signs of Arthritis in dogs to look out for in your senior pets!

What can you do to keep your pet more comfortable?

Check in with your vet:
- Rule out any other causes for these changes.
- Discuss nutrition options to support your dog’s physical needs and joint health.
- Gather information on treatments to increase your pets comfort - such as anti-inflammatories or injections.

At home:
- Provide comfy places for them to rest with ample cushion and support.
- Consider ramps or pet-stairs for getting into/out of vehicles or navigating furniture.
- Ensure your pet maintains a healthy weight to reduce strain on their joints.
- Go for shorter and more gentle walks, and have more relaxed play time.
- Raise your dog’s food and water dishes to elbow height to allow easier access.
- Use rugs or carpet to provide them with non-slip floor surfaces.
- And as always - trust your gut - if something feels off to you, you are likely right!

Have questions? Feel free to call or send us an e-mail. Our contact info can be found in our bio.
