Cardiomyopathy, literally means “disease of the heart muscle,” refers to primary diseases of this heart muscle itself, as opposed to diseases of the heart valves, blood vessels, and the tissue that conducts electrical activity through the heart. Feline cardiomyopathies can cause the heart muscle to become too thick, too thin, and/or inflamed. These changes in heart structure are commonly accompanied by a decreased ability of the heart to efficiently pump blood that can lead to congestive heart failure, paralysis-causing blood clots, and, in some cases, sudden death.

The cause of most feline cardiomyopathies is currently unknown, and many have been shown to be or are presumed to be genetically mediated. Some, however, occur secondary to other diseases such as hyperthyroidism, high blood pressure or inflammation within the myocardium.

With appropriate care, a cat diagnosed with cardiomyopathy may survive for years, depending upon whether congestive heart failure and/or thromboembolism occurs.

Did you know your dog could help save another dog’s life just by being their sweet, treat-loving self? 🐾

The Canadian Animal Blood Bank is always looking for doggy donors, and there's a cool perk a lot of people may not know about: for every donation your dog gives, a credit is placed on their file for 1 free unit of blood in case they ever need it down the road. That means if they donate 6 times, they’ve got 6 free units credited to them, just in case. ❤️ Check out the photo below to find more fun perks for your dog when they become a blood donor! 🩸

At Pulse, we’re so honored to support the Canadian Animal Blood Bank and host donor clinics right here at our hospital all the time. It’s one of our favorite ways to give back to the dog community 🐾

To be a donor, dogs need to:
🐶 Be 1–8 years old
⚖️ Weigh over 55 lbs (25kg)
💉 Be up to date on vaccines
😊 Have an even-temperament
🩺 Be in good health
🍖 And, of course, love treats!

If this sounds like your pup, send an email to [email protected] and they’ll provide further information and answer any questions or concerns you may have.

This kind of thing really does save lives — and your dog could be the reason another pup gets to go home to their family. 🐾💕

Today is Take Your Cat to the Vet Day!

Did you know? 58% of caregivers say their cat hates going to the vet. One way to make the experience easier is by helping your cat get used to their carrier at home, so it feels safe rather than stressful.

Routine check-ups are just as important. For older cats, blood pressure checks can catch hidden health issues early. Prevention is always better than cure.

Work with your vet to make visits less stressful for your feline friend.

We have been fielding many calls from concerned members of the public regarding bats, as is typical for this time of year, so we figured it was a good time to do another post about bats! 🦇

Alberta has nine species of bats. Specifically, within the Edmonton area, there are Big Brown Bats, Little Brown Bats, Silver-Haired Bats, and occasionally Hoary Bats. Although many bats migrate south, Big Brown Bats actually migrate into the city and urban areas. This makes bat sightings in August and September quite common, often in potentially unusual locations.

Wondering what to do if you come across a bat? If they are hanging vertically, even from a wall, they are likely just fine and should be left alone. These bats are probably just sunning and would appreciate being left undisturbed. However, if you find a bat on the ground, be sure to give us a call! Bats cannot take flight from a horizontal surface, so we can guide you through the proper steps to help in a way that is safe for both you and the bat.

Bats can act as vectors for rabies and have also been confirmed to carry White-Nose Syndrome in the Edmonton area. White-Nose Syndrome is a species-specific fungus that can be fatal to bats if contracted. Due to these health concerns, please call WILDNorth and access information via the link below. Always ask before you act, so we can ensure safety for everyone.

We do everything we can to help every creature that comes through our doors, and for each animal, this care looks very different. If we have a bat recuperating in our care, we keep it in isolation and offer it a secluded enclosure with mealworms for dinner.
