Meet Enzo, one of our French bulldog patients.🐾

Enzo has whats is called BOAS ( brachicephalic obstructive airway syndrome) . Very common in these breeds. Notice the very narrowed nostrils, and what you can’t see is his elongated soft palate in his throat which is common in BOAS.

Listen to Enzo breathe in the video. The snoring sound that people think is ‘normal’. This is not normal nor is it safe for them. Enzo came to us at Central Vet for surgery to have his nostrils ‘opened’ so that he could breathe better and a soft palate resection to help with the breathing and stop the snoring.

Look at Enzo immediately post op in the 3rd slide. Enzo came back for a recheck in 2 weeks and look how happy he is.

Thanks to Dr. Karl Maritato who taught us these procedures, we were able to help Enzo.
Happy pet=happy vet. No more snoring in bed Enzo :)

Earlier this year, Dr. Bullen and Vet Tech Tim Maynard from the Central Vet family headed back to school—this time as guests at the Harrison College Career Fair!

They shared what life is really like as a veterinarian and vet tech, answered tons of great questions, and inspired future animal lovers to follow their passion. 💙

And of course… they didn’t come alone. One very sweet (and very popular) pup joined them at the booth to help steal hearts and demonstrate just how rewarding this career can be! 🐶✨

🚨 GDV is a true emergency — and knowing the signs could save your dog’s life. 🐾

Reposting this important message from and Capital City Specialty & Emergency Animal Hospital to raise awareness on Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus.
What is GDV? The stomach fills with gas and twists on itself, cutting off blood flow and trapping contents. It can progress in minutes and is fatal without urgent surgery.

🛑 Signs to watch for:
* Non-productive retching
* Sudden bloating
* Restlessness or pacing
* Collapse

🩺 Treatment: Emergency surgery is the only life-saving option.

✅ Prevention tips:
* Consider a prophylactic gastropexy (stomach tacking), especially for deep-chested breeds like Great Danes, Weimaraners, and Standard Poodles.
* Avoid exercise 1 hour before and 2+ hours after meals.
* Feed 2–3 smaller meals daily rather than one large meal.
* Use slow-feeder bowls to prevent gulping.
* Avoid excessive water intake right after eating.
* Limit stress and rapid eating, especially in multi-dog households.

❗But even with the best care, sometimes prevention isn’t possible. Some dogs develop GDV with no clear trigger — knowing the signs and acting fast is key.

⏱️ If you even suspect GDV, don’t wait. Get to an emergency vet immediately.
