Training Starts Before Formal Training Begins

The success of any training program begins long before the first exercise. It starts with how we manage our dogs every day:

🍖 Feeding – Do we provide a healthy and nutritious diet?
🛏️ Housing – Where do they sleep or spend most of their day?
🚪 Access – What does the dog get free access to during the day?
💪 Health & fitness – A fit, pain-free dog makes a great student.
🐾 Informal interactions – What do we reinforce without realising?

These factors set the stage. If they’re off, training is going to feel like an uphill battle.

The Real Questions to Ask

Instead of “is my dog stubborn?”, try these:

- Are we communicating in a clear and concise manner? Is our communication full of white-noise? Has our dog learned to check out?
- Do they have free access to everything they want? Why work for more?
- Have we found the right motivator? (Some dogs live for food, others for toys, others for play.)
- Have we skipped steps, like trying to develop a recall before the dog even understands basic markers and engagement?
- Could there be a medical condition holding them back?
- Has the dog had negative past experiences that may be impacting an exercise?

Motivation Over “Stubbornness”

Some dogs appear laid-back or lazy, but that’s often shaped by lifestyle, not personality. Most dogs aren’t stubborn, they just haven’t been shown why working with us is exciting and fun.

🔑 Motivation is key. Find what makes your dog tick and build from there. That’s when training becomes fun, for both of you.

With over 10 years of experience in dog training, Andrew specialises in advanced obedience, engagement development, protection sports including Mondio Ring / PSA and operational dog development for government agencies. He is a former certified decoy in Mondio Ring and currently a certified decoy in PSA, with titled dogs in both sports, as well as achieving Best BH in IGP.
 
Andrew has worked extensively as both a trainer and decoy with government agencies and sport dog clubs, helping handlers develop clearer communication, stronger relationships, and higher performing dogs.

This workshop is designed for those who want to better understand how to build meaningful play with their dog, implement clear steps to increase engagement, and develop a stronger, more responsive relationship where the dog actively seeks interaction with the handler. It also covers how to channel that engagement into usable, controlled drive for training.

This is a private lesson package, carefully developed to assist with these behavioural issues. Your trainer does have access to dogs which can be used in these sessions.

A private lesson format is the best option for these cases, as it provides a more careful mechanism to introduce dogs and to start the counter conditioning process, leading to real results.

Once working through the private lesson package you will be far better equipped to join a class.

BIO 👉 Dr. Stewart Hilliard began his life’s work—breeding and training dogs—as a youth in Colorado in 1979. He started in the German working dog tradition, competing with his dogs in Schutzhund. Then in the mid-1980’s he travelled to Europe and studied Ring Sport and KNPV— becoming one of the earliest importers of working-bred Belgian Malinois to the US— and in 1987 he established French Ring Sporton American soil, serving as the first president of the American Ring Federation.

After 10 years of intensive training of companion and working (sport and law enforcement) dogs, Stewart enrolled in the graduate Psychology program at the University of Texas, receiving his PhD in Behavioral Neuroscience in 1998. Subsequently Dr. Hilliard accepted a post-doctoral position with the United States Army Military Working Dog Veterinary Service at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, where he founded working dog breeding programs for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Department of Defense (DoD), and performed extensive research on the use of working dogs to detect biological and chemical threat substances. In 2004 Dr. Hilliard joined Lackland’s 341st Training Squadron, which is tasked with providing the hundreds of trained Military Working Dogs (MWDs) required by US Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, and Navy forces around the world.

During his career in the DoD MWD Program, Dr. Hilliard served as the Chief of the MWD Training Course, MWD Logistics, MWD Procurement, and MWD Training Evaluations. He advocated for and led major reforms in DoD working dog operations— revising and formalized MWD training and procurement evaluations, and writing the DoD manuals for substance detection and obedience training. Dr. Hilliard presently manages the DoDMilitary Working Dog Breeding Program, now in its 25th year of supplying working dogs to conventional and special US military forces, as well as the US Department of Homeland Security and many civil law enforcement agencies.
