Get To Know Your Trainer: The Journey That Lead To Empowered K9
👋Hi everyone, I’m Michelle. I thought I would take a moment to introduce myself and share the story behind my journey to becoming a dog trainer.
Dogs have always been a big part of my life. Growing up, I admired the incredible bond between my dad and his German Wirehaired Pointer. The trust, communication, and connection they shared left a lasting impression on me and sparked my love for dog training from a young age.
My career actually started as a pastry chef, but I quickly realised it wasn’t the right path for me. Everything changed when I joined a group training class with my little rescue dog, Molly, who was very nervous and lacked confidence.
There’s a saying in the dog industry: *“Which dog made you become a dog trainer?”* For me, that dog was Molly.
Watching her grow through training showed me how powerful clear communication, patience, and understanding can be for both dogs and their owners. Seeing her confidence build inspired me to study and become a professional dog trainer myself.
I also spent time working in a boarding kennel, where I learnt so much about dog communication, behaviour, and body language through hands-on experience with all different types of dogs.
From there, I started my first business, Unleashed Dog Training and Daycare in Shepparton, which I owned and operated for 5 years. After having a baby, relocating, and selling the business, I have now began the next chapter of my journey by creating Empowered K9 in Wangaratta.
Today, through Empowered K9, I help dogs and owners across North-East Victoria build confidence, communication, and strong relationships through practical, compassionate training methods. Seeing that moment when communication clicks, confidence grows, and trust deepens is why I started this journey in the first place—and why I continue to love it every day.
And as for Molly — she’s now happily retired and living her best life with my mum, after changing the course of mine forever.
