Good to know

Do you know what to do if your dog is choking?

It’s a terrifying situation that can happen in seconds. Dogs can accidentally choke on bones, toys, sticks, socks, balls, or other objects that become lodged in their throat or windpipe.

Signs of choking may include:
• Gasping or struggling to breathe
• Pawing at the mouth
• Violent coughing
• Panic or distress
• Blue gums or tongue

STEP 1: Check the mouth first
Carefully open your dog’s mouth and look for a visible object.

• Only remove it if you can clearly see it and it comes out easily.
• Do NOT blindly grab at the throat — you could push the object farther down or injure your dog.

STEP 2: Try gravity
For small dogs:
• Hold them gently by the thighs with their head pointed downward.

For large dogs:
• Lift the back legs like a wheelbarrow to tilt them forward.

STEP 3: Perform the Heimlich maneuver

⚠️ Only perform the Heimlich maneuver if you are certain your dog is choking on a foreign object and cannot breathe properly. Improper force can cause internal injuries.

For SMALL dogs:
• Kneel behind your dog.
• Place a few knuckles just below the rib cage on the soft abdomen.
• Push inward and upward with quick thrusts 4–5 times maximum.

For MEDIUM or LARGE dogs:
• Stand behind your dog.
• Make a fist and place it just below the rib cage on the soft abdomen.
• Grasp the fist with your other hand.
• Give quick inward-and-upward thrusts 4–5 times maximum.

After thrusts:
• Check the mouth again for the object.
• Remove it carefully if visible and easy to reach.

⚠️ If your dog becomes unconscious, begin rescue breathing/CPR immediately and get to an emergency veterinarian right away.

Even if the object comes out, it’s still important to have your dog examined by a veterinarian afterward to check for internal injuries or airway damage.
