Making progress on my Sashiko Sparkle bag from Worn Of A Kind 🧵

It’s a little hard to see how it’s all coming together while the white stencil is still there, but the running stitches and French knots are finished!

Next up is learning another new stitch, the chain stitch.

I’m really enjoying this technique and the process of learning new stitches along the way. There’s something so satisfying about trying something new and watching your skills improve, one stitch at a time.

Do you enjoy learning new things, especially when it comes to being creative? ✨

A little weekend project that turned out rather nicely.

I picked up this little three-drawer cabinet and decided to give it a new look. The original pink floral drawers were quite pretty, but not really my style.

A couple of coats of primer, some sage green paint, a little gold stencilling and new antique bronze k***s later, and here we are.

I deliberately kept the gold pattern a little uneven and faded. I wanted it to have that lovely aged look, as though it had been there for years.

It’s now sitting on my bureau, ready to be filled with little sewing treasures and all those bits and pieces I seem to collect.

There’s something very satisfying about taking an ordinary little object and making it your own.

After months of ideas, photographs, writing and more than a few battles with technology, Wildly Ordinary finally has its own little home on the internet.

I wanted to create somewhere that brings together all the things I love. Making things by hand, collecting old treasures, reading, writing letters, keeping memories and finding pleasure in the ordinary parts of everyday life.

There’s a place for creativity, a little corner for slower living, a Correspondence Circle for those who still love the idea of a handwritten letter, and a shop that will gradually fill with vintage finds and one-of-a-kind handmade pieces.

It’s still growing, and I rather like that. There’s no rush to fill every corner.

If you’ve been following along, thank you for being part of it. And if you’re new here, I’d love you to come and have a look around.

You can find Wildly Ordinary through the link in my bio.

A little more of Wildly Ordinary is coming soon.

I’ve been quietly putting together a website. Somewhere to bring together the things I love: old treasures, books, making things by hand, writing letters, sharing stories and finding pleasure in ordinary everyday life.

There’ll be a little shop too, with vintage finds, creative supplies and the occasional handmade piece.

It’s all slowly coming together, and I’m looking forward to sharing it with you.

Yesterday I came across the word hussif. I’d never heard of one, so naturally I had to look it up!

A hussif (short for housewife) is a little roll-up sewing kit used to keep needles, thread, scissors and other essentials together. They’ve been around for centuries and were particularly popular with soldiers during the 18th and 19th centuries, remaining common in military sewing kits well into the 20th century.

Well, one thing led to another. I found a pattern, pulled out some pretty fabrics and lace, and made my own, changing a few things as I went.

And here it is! I do love discovering an old-fashioned idea that’s still so useful today. 🪡

Ever heard of a hussif? 🪡

An old-fashioned little sewing kit, made for keeping needles, thread, scissors and all those tiny essentials together.

Made mine today with some pretty vintage-inspired florals and a little lace. I think I might be making a few more of these! 🌸

I’ve been spending a little time behind the scenes, slowly bringing together a place for Wildly Ordinary to call home.

Somewhere to share the things I love. Old things with stories to tell, making things by hand, books, letters, everyday rituals and all those little details that make ordinary life interesting.

It’s been lovely thinking about how all these different interests fit together, because to me, they’ve always been part of the same thing.

There’s still a little work to do, but I’m looking forward to sharing more of it with you.

For now, I thought I’d let you in on what I’ve been quietly working away at. 🌿

A little work in progress from yesterday’s sewing table. 🪡🧵

I started putting together this journal cover, inspired by the beautiful work of Tilly Rose and her book Daydream Journals, which has given me so many ideas for working with fabric, lace and treasured little scraps.

I’ve been enjoying playing with layers of vintage lace, soft pinks, muted greens, ribbons and pretty embellishments. There’s still plenty of hand stitching to be done, and no doubt I’ll add a few more bits and pieces along the way.

I’m really enjoying seeing it slowly come together, with no particular rush to finish. Sometimes the making is just as enjoyable as the finished piece.

🍏 A little apple for my sewing basket!

I’ve spent some time making this sweet little apple pincushion, using a lovely pattern from Nic 🪡 Patchwork + Quilt Designer 🧵 Hand piecing + applique , and I’m rather pleased with how it turned out.

I chose a mixture of green floral and polka dot fabrics, added a couple of felt leaves, a little stem and a button underneath to finish it off. There’s something so satisfying about turning a few scraps of fabric into something that’s both pretty and practical.

It’s now found its home in my sewing basket, although I think it’s almost too lovely to stick pins into!

I’m really enjoying these little sewing projects lately. Taking my time, learning new techniques and making things simply for the pleasure of making them.

Are you a pincushion collector, or do you just have the one trusty pincushion you’ve used for years? 🧵

There’s something rather special about receiving beautiful mail, especially when it arrives with a handwritten letter and a little something to enjoy with a cup of tea. 💌🫖

I was so delighted to receive the very first October edition of The Gentle Post from the lovely Rhiannon at Run Rabbit Run, and I just had to share it with you.

From the gorgeous original artwork to the thoughtful little details, everything has been put together with such care. Inside was a beautiful handwritten letter, a postcard, lovely paper treasures, a bookmark and even a teabag of French Earl Grey, which I fully intend to enjoy while I sit down and spend some time with all my new little bits and pieces.

It really is such a joy to receive something like this in the post. Something that isn’t a bill, an advertisement or another thing demanding our attention, but simply a little envelope of happiness inviting us to slow down for a while.

I think what Rhiannon has created with The Gentle Post deserves to be shared and supported. If you’re someone who loves slow living, handwritten letters, beautiful stationery and the simple pleasure of finding something lovely in your letterbox, please pop over and give her a follow at Rhiannon • Handmade Art • Slow Living • Chronic Illness . 🌸

And if you’re tempted to treat yourself, I can wholeheartedly recommend signing up for the November edition of The Gentle Post. I really don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

I’ve included the QR code in the final slide of this carousel, or you can visit Rhiannon’s Instagram to find out more.

Let’s support the lovely people who are keeping the art of beautiful, thoughtful correspondence alive. 💗
