It always saddens me when I see breeding dogs on Facebook with noses consistent with Discoid Lupus. Seeing one is horrible, seeing a pair is so sad, due to the increased risk of puppies inheriting the disease. If parents have noses that look anything other than perfect it is best to avoid their puppies ...... irrespective of the reason given. There are plenty of “parents” out there with perfect noses. Having a “girl” with Discoid Lupus (not bred by me or bred from), I would never risk it.

There’s no genetic testing and symptoms don’t usually appear until around 12 to 18 months of age. You can help stop the spread of the disease by becoming more aware and not buying puppies from “parents” with suspect noses. If people stop buying puppies from suspect “parents”, breeders will stop breeding from them.

The disease is a progressive, insidious, autoimmune disease. It is no fun for dogs or their families.

THINK BEFORE YOU BUY A PUPPY FROM ONE OR MORE AFFECTED “PARENTS”! Parents of Discoid Lupus puppies may look fine, as they can pass the disease down from their ancestors. There is just a much greater chance of a puppy inheriting Discoid Lupus if one parent is showing signs and a huge chance of a puppy inheriting the disease if both parents have the disease.

The dog in the photo has Discoid Lupus. Her nose looks fine because of the care she is receiving. I would never breed from this girl, despite appearances.

This big boof is Bentley!

Bentley’s first visit went like this:
Sedated, 2 hours of growling, snapping, snarling, barking, snatching legs, jumping around in the sling on the table and a slippery eel in the tub, overall a totally wally. 🫣

Bentleys second visit today went like this:
No sedation, 70 minutes, some whining and barking at the blower, NO snapping, snarling, barking, NO snatching legs or movement on the table or tub, overall a total legend. 🥰

How?

On his first visit, i ignored him like a crazy ex, all his efforts to deter me like his previous groomers failed. No matter what he did I just kept doing what I was doing, unfazed and unbothered. He was not in pain, he was not uncomfortable, he was just being a jerk because he learned that he could be. Breed experience tells me that a dramatic border collie will take 3 miles if you give them 3 centimetres, so just don’t give them anything. 🤣
