Hi everyone
It is hugely concerning that H5 Avian flu has reached Australia.
More affected birds are being discovered every day in Western Australia. Our poultry farmers are doing everything to ensure the health of our free range poultry industry.
Does this impact our Cats?
The answer is YES.
Indoor cats are mostly safe.
However, if your cat is allowed into their backyard, even if supervised, they could come in contact with bird droppings or affected birds. The risk is extremely high for outdoor roaming cats.
If you have a Catio that is open to the elements, it could be affected by bird droppings.
As you may be aware, we can bring viruses and bacteria into our homes through our shoes. After shopping, gardening, or trekking anywhere, it is extremely important to remove your shoes at the door, before entering your home. Disinfection of shoes is a must before bringing them indoors.
Please don’t touch affected birds - a sluggish bird on the ground may be infected. Please contact the proper authorities in your area to assess and deal with the bird or birds in question.

Finally, all mammals are susceptible to the H5 virus, including humans.
Call 1800 675 888 if you see any dead or struggling birds in Australia. Do not touch any birds.
