🐾❤️ SOMETIMES THE BEST TRAINING IS NO TRAINING AT ALL! ❤️🐾

Meet the gorgeous Leon! 🥹🐶

Today’s session was a little different from our usual training sessions, and that’s because Leon is really struggling at the moment. 💔

This beautiful boy has become increasingly anxious, fearful and overwhelmed by everyday things that previously didn’t bother him. From ceiling fans and unfamiliar noises to being left alone, his confidence has taken a significant knock.

Today, Leon was constantly on high alert, struggling to switch off and relax. 😢

So rather than asking him to perform behaviours, practise commands or face his fears, we decided it was time to hit the RESET button!

For the next 14 days, our focus is on:

Creating safe spaces where Leon can retreat without being disturbed.

Prioritising quality sleep, rest and recovery.

Reducing stimulation and allowing his nervous system time to settle.

Giving him choices, predictability and reassurance.

Providing gentle, calming enrichment without pressure.

Temporarily reducing walks and exposure to overwhelming environments.

Supporting his confidence and independence at his own pace.

We’re also working alongside veterinary care to investigate possible medical contributors and review his anxiety management.

One of the biggest misconceptions in dog training is that more exercise, more exposure and more training will fix everything.

But when a dog is already overwhelmed, sometimes MORE is the very last thing they need!

You cannot expect a dog to learn effectively when they’re constantly operating in survival mode.

And sometimes the kindest, most productive thing we can do is simply give them permission to REST.

Leon doesn’t need to be pushed harder. He needs to feel safe again.

Every dog’s journey is different, and progress isn’t always measured by how many commands they can perform.

Sometimes progress is simply a dog finally feeling safe enough to close their eyes and have a proper sleep.

🐾 PROGRESS ISN’T ALWAYS PERFECT… BUT LOOK AT THAT SMILE! 😍🐶❤️

Archie was back at the Gympie Duck Ponds today, working on building his confidence, emotional regulation and learning to stay calm around other dogs. 🐕💪

And WOW, did this gorgeous boy make me proud! 🥹❤️

We started off near the car, watching two other dogs doing their training. Archie was relaxed, engaged, responding beautifully to cues and happily observing the world around him without reacting. 🙌🐾

Then… life decided to throw us a few curveballs! 🤦‍♀️😂

An unexpected visitor with a rather vocal little dog repeatedly approached us, despite our attempts to create space. Archie found this overwhelming, and just as we retreated to the car, TWO more cars arrived beside us with barking little dogs! 😳🐕

Talk about a challenging training environment!

But here’s the important part… 👇

❤️ One reaction does NOT erase all the amazing progress made beforehand!

Archie demonstrated some beautiful skills today:
🐾 Calmly observing other dogs
🐾 Choosing to engage with his trainer
🐾 Building confidence at a safe distance
🐾 Practising emotional regulation
🐾 Learning that other dogs don’t always require a response

Reactive dog training isn’t about expecting perfection. It’s about building confidence, creating positive experiences and helping dogs feel safe in their environment.

And sometimes, the biggest training challenge isn’t the dog you’re working with… it’s the humans who don’t understand personal space! 😂🤦‍♀️

🐾💕 CUTENESS OVERLOAD! MEET ROSIE! 💕🐾

Those eyes! 😍🥹 How could anyone possibly say no to that gorgeous little face?!

Today at Chasing Perfection Dog Training, I had the pleasure of working with the adorable Rosie! 🐩❤️

Our training session focused on:

🐾 Four paws on the floor – Learning that jumping isn’t necessary to get attention!

🐾 Calm greetings – Teaching Rosie that keeping her paws on the ground is the best way to say hello! 🥰

🐾 Loose lead walking – Building the foundations for relaxed, enjoyable walks without pulling! 🦮

Training isn’t about taking away a dog’s personality. It’s about teaching them the skills to navigate the world confidently and calmly. ❤️

And with a face like Rosie’s, resisting those puppy-dog eyes might just be the hardest part of training! 😂🐾

AN UPDATE ON OUR BEAUTIFUL PHOENIX

When Phoenix was diagnosed with aggressive cancer in June, we were given a heartbreaking prognosis. But our beautiful boy has already outlived expectations and continues to leave vets amazed. He’s truly one in a million.
I genuinely believe a huge part of him still being here is thanks to Sunshine Coast Mushrooms and their Turkey Tail and Lion’s Mane supplements. Their kindness has been incredible. They even created a special blend just for him, labelled “Phoenix’s Blend.” It brought tears to my eyes. I’ll never be able to thank them enough.

The last two weeks have been harder. Phoenix has definitely slowed down, can’t walk as far, and the humidity really knocks him around. He has his good days and bad days, but goodness, he’s fighting hard.

He’s become extra clingy and won’t let me far out of his sight. And that’s okay. He’ll never be alone.

Despite everything, he’s still our Phoenix!
Breakfast, lunchtime charcoal and dinner are still expected like clockwork, although His Majesty now demands room service in bed!
He still loves car rides with his head out the window.
Slow sniffy walks and visits to Lake Weyba remain favourites.

He still plays under the hose, loves his food, treats and cuddles, and hogs practically the entire bed!

Most nights I barely sleep, constantly checking he’s comfortable and breathing peacefully beside me. ❤️

Life now revolves around making sure he’s happy, comfortable and surrounded by love.

The thought of saying goodbye is overwhelming, gut-wrenching and heartbreaking. Some days it’s simply too much to comprehend. 💔 That’s when little Duke comes to the rescue, snuggling in and somehow calming us both.

Phoenix is such a rare, special boy who has defied the odds and amazed specialists time and time again.

I don’t know how much time we have left, but every extra day is a gift I’ll never take for granted.

Keep fighting, my beautiful boy, but only while you’re happy and comfortable. You have nothing left to prove. ❤️

Forever wouldn’t be long enough. 🥹🐾

🐩💗 FROM LITTLE STEPS TO BIG MILESTONES! 🐾

Could your dog do THIS?! 👀

Today was another big day for beautiful Nala as she continued preparing for her Public Access Test (PAT)! 💪

Escalators, moving surfaces, busy public spaces and plenty of distractions — all while learning to remain calm, confident and connected to her handler. 🥹❤️

What looks like a simple outing is actually months of patience, positive reinforcement, trust and teamwork.

We’re not rushing Nala. We’re giving her the confidence to make good choices and succeed at her own pace.

Because a great assistance dog isn’t just trained to perform tasks — they’re taught to feel safe and confident in the world around them. 🐾

So proud of this gorgeous girl and how far she’s come! 💕

🐾 TWO DOGS. ONE BUSY SHOPPING CENTRE. A WHOLE LOT OF TRAINING! 🤯🐕‍🦺

Today Sunny and Buddha took on Sunshine Plaza for their Queensland Public Access Test (PAT) preparation! 💪

And this wasn’t your average shopping trip!

🛗 Lifts and moving walkways
🛒 Walking calmly beside shopping trolleys
🐾 Loose-lead walking through busy shops
👀 Ignoring people, distractions and tempting displays
🧠 Building focus, confidence and independence

Every distraction was another opportunity to learn. Every calm decision was a win. ❤️

Assistance dog training isn’t about having a dog who can simply sit and stay. It’s about developing a reliable working partnership in the real world, where life is unpredictable!

So proud of Sunny, Buddha and their handlers for the work they’re putting in. 🥹👏

The goal isn’t perfection overnight. It’s progress, one paw at a time. 🐾

Meet Ollie & Teddy… two very handsome boys who are proving that training can be just as much fun as playtime! 💙🐾

These gorgeous boys have been working hard on building confidence, loose lead walking, staying calm around distractions and learning to focus on their humans when the world gets exciting! 🐕✨

Today was all about putting those skills into practice in a real-world environment. 🌳

🐾 TWO GOLDEN RETRIEVERS. ONE BRAVE ARCHIE. AND A HUGE WIN! 🥹💙

To some, this might look like a dog simply watching two Golden Retrievers in the distance…

But to us? THIS IS HUGE! 🙌🐕

After a frightening experience with another dog, Archie’s confidence has taken a knock. So right now, we’re not focusing on how close he can get to other dogs.

We’re focusing on how SAFE he feels around them. ❤️

Today, we worked on one of my favourite positive reinforcement techniques — ENGAGE & DISENGAGE! 🧠🐾

👀 ENGAGE: Archie notices the Golden Retrievers in the distance.

🧠 PROCESS: He has the opportunity to observe them from a distance where he feels comfortable.

💙 DISENGAGE: He redirects his attention away from the dogs, and we reinforce that choice!

No forcing interactions. No flooding. No pressure.

Just patience, positive reinforcement and helping Archie learn that seeing another dog doesn’t have to be scary. 🥹

✨ Because progress isn’t always about getting closer. Sometimes it’s about feeling safer.

And those little moments of calm? They’re the building blocks of BIG confidence! 💪🐾

Meet Duke, our handsome Border Collie, proving that being an assistance dog isn’t just about knowing commands — it’s about confidence, focus, self-control and making great choices, even when the world is full of distractions! 🙌

🎓 TODAY’S TRAINING CHALLENGE:

🐾 Loose-lead walking – Walking calmly and staying connected.

🚦 Verbal cues – STOP, SLOW, LEFT and RIGHT, responding to directions.

🛑 Stay – Holding position despite everything happening around him.

👀 Laser focus – Ignoring pedestrians, cyclists and other dogs.

🔄 Go Round – His FIRST time practising this skill out in public! An incredibly useful foundation for crowd control and creating space for his handler.

💙 Deep Pressure Therapy (DPT) – Practising an important assistance task.

🪑 Settle – Relaxing quietly under a chair and on his mat.

🚫 Ignoring attention – Even when people tried to get his attention, Duke stayed focused on his job!

📍 THE LOCATION? A busy medical hub, with doctors, patients and visitors constantly coming and going, PLUS Petbarn just across the road! 🐕🚲🚶

And Duke? Cool. Calm. Collected. 😎

✨ THIS is what assistance dog training looks like.

It’s not about having a dog who can perform a few impressive tricks. It’s about developing a dog who can remain calm, responsive, reliable and comfortable in real-world environments.

Because sometimes the most impressive thing an assistance dog can do is… absolutely nothing. 💙

No barking. No pulling. No seeking attention. Just quietly getting on with the job.

And that deserves just as much recognition as the fancy tasks! 👏

Who says visitors arriving has to mean barking, excitement and complete chaos?! 🤣🐶

Today, these two gorgeous girls absolutely NAILED their training! 🌟👏

We’ve been working hard on calm greetings, emotional regulation and teaching Pebbles & Macey that people arriving at the house doesn’t have to be a big event! 🏡🐾

And today we put their new skills to the ULTIMATE test… REAL-LIFE VISITORS! 🚪👀

When relatives popped over, instead of the usual barking and excitement, the girls were…

🤫 ZERO barking!
🐾 ZERO over-the-top reactions!
😎 100% cool, calm and collected!

Not a single bark from either girl! 🙌🥹

This is what positive reinforcement training is all about! ❤️ Teaching dogs the skills to feel calm, confident and comfortable in everyday situations, rather than simply expecting them to behave.

The goal isn’t to stop dogs from being excited about visitors. It’s to teach them how to manage that excitement! 🧠🐕
