Has notes on the house.

The blanket was washed without consultation. The good chair has a throw on it now, and the throw has been washed twice. The gift left on the doormat on Thursday was not acknowledged. It was put in the bin.

The house used to smell like everyone who lives in it. Lately it only smells like you.

All of it has been written down. Some of it rhymes.

He can smell what you had for dinner on Tuesday.

So he knows the house better than you do. The couch. The rug. The jacket from the pub. The spot by the door where everyone drops their shoes.

He also knows when it changes. The roll at the park that earned him a bath. The thing he carried home that went straight in the bin. His bed, back from the wash, smelling like nobody.

He doesn't mind. He'd just like to know who decides these things.

She doesn't come on the walk. She doesn't need to.

She sees you leave with your pocket full. She sees you come back with it empty. She watches you wash your hands like you've been somewhere.

She has opinions about the dog. She has more about you.

She's been in the studio all week. She says she's only there to keep an eye on things.

Seven o'clock. The lead comes off the hook.

He's done this walk with you most mornings of his life. Same door. Same letterbox. Same long stop at the corner with the good grass.

And every morning, at roughly the same spot, you do the thing. You stop. You check your pocket. You bend down with a little sigh you don't know you make. Then you carry it, the whole way, to a bin you have very specific feelings about.

He has watched all of it. He has never once been asked for his view.

He has a view.
