🌱 IN THE CROP WITH CRS - Hay’s in the shed. Is it safe?

After a big push to get hay cut and baled, the last thing anyone wants is to lose it, or the shed, to a stack fire.

Hay baled too wet can heat up as it cures. In bad cases it can catch fire on its own, sometimes weeks after it’s been stacked. With bushfire season now underway, a hay fire is the last thing you need.

Keep an eye on:
🌾 Bales that feel warm, damp or heavier than usual
🌾 A sweet, caramel or burning smell around the stack
🌾 Steam or condensation on cool mornings
🌾 Mould or discolouration in the bales

Tips to reduce the risk:
✅ Check moisture before you bale and before you stack
✅ Leave airflow gaps between bales and stacks
✅ Stack away from machinery, fuel and buildings where you can
✅ Check stack temperature regularly for the first six weeks

If a stack is getting hot, don’t pull it apart. That can let air in and start a fire. Call the NSW RFS for advice.
