๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’™ Meet Gandalf! Our Brave Little Man! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿพ

This beautiful little boy, Gandalf, came into Marsden Veterinary Surgery for his castration and vaccinations โ€” two very important parts of keeping him happy, healthy and protected! ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฉบ

We know that coming to the vet can sometimes be a little scary for our feline friends. New smells, strange sounds, being handled and having procedures done can all be overwhelming. ๐Ÿ˜ฟ

That's why we do everything we can to make their visit as calm, positive and stress-free as possible. ๐Ÿ’•

After his procedure, our brave little Gandalf received a very special post-surgery reward โ€” a Lickimat filled with yummy treats! ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿพ

It gave him something enjoyable to focus on while he relaxed and waited for Mum and Dad to come and collect him.

โœจ Why do we do this?

Because positive experiences really matter!

We want our patients to learn that coming to the vet doesn't always mean something scary or unpleasant. Even when they need a vaccination, blood test or surgery, we want them to have something positive to remember too. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Through treats, patience, gentle handling, cuddles (when they want them!) and plenty of encouragement, we can help build positive associations with the vet and make future visits easier and less stressful. Even bringing your pet in for a happy visit, pop them on the scales, receive a treat, say hi to the team then return home, helps teach our pets you don't need to be scared.

Because let's be honestโ€ฆ not every part of a vet visit can be fun, but we can always try to make it a GOOD experience! ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿ’™

And Gandalf certainly seemed to approve of his Lickimat! ๐Ÿ˜

Well done, handsome Gandalf โ€” you were such a brave little patient! ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿพ Meet beautiful Coco ๐Ÿพ

At the beginning of the week, gorgeous Coco came into Marsden Veterinary Surgery for an emergency procedure with our amazing Dr Josh, after developing pyometra (pyo) โ€” a serious and potentially life-threatening infection of the uterus.

Coco was incredibly brave, and our amazing veterinary and nursing team cared for her every step of the way. โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

You might notice Coco looks a little sad in her photo ๐Ÿฅบ she was still quite sleepy and groggy when she went home that night after her procedure. Dr Josh explained Coco had been through a big day, so plenty of rest, cuddles and recovery time were exactly what she needed. ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿถ

๐Ÿฉบ So, what exactly is a pyometra?

Pyometra is a severe infection of the uterus that can occur in un-desexed female dogs (and cats). It commonly develops after a heat cycle when hormonal changes make the uterus more vulnerable to infection. The uterus can fill with pus and, if left untreated, the infection can spread throughout the body.

A pet with pyometra can become extremely unwell, showing signs such as:

๐Ÿพ Lethargy and weakness
๐Ÿพ Not wanting to eat
๐Ÿพ Drinking and urinating much more than usual
๐Ÿพ Vomiting or diarrhoea
๐Ÿพ A swollen or painful abdomen
๐Ÿพ Vaginal discharge โ€” although there may be NO discharge at all
๐Ÿพ Fever or becoming dangerously unwell from infection

Without prompt treatment, pyometra can progress to sepsis, organ failure, uterine rupture and sadly, death. ๐Ÿ˜”

The good news? Pyometra is largely preventable. โค๏ธ

โœจ Desexing your female pet prevents pyometra because the uterus is removed during the procedure. It also prevents unwanted pregnancies and can provide other important health benefits.

Coco was lucky to receive the treatment she needed, and we are so proud of how brave she was ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿถ

Her story is a beautiful reminder that desexing isn't just about preventing unwanted litters โ€” it can potentially save your pet's life.

If your female dog or cat is not yet desexed, speak with our team about whether desexing is right for her and the best time to do it - 07 3200 6045.

๐Ÿ’• Prevention is always better than an emergency.

Get well soon, sweet Coco! We can't wait to see your beautiful happy face again soon! ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’—

๐Ÿพ Meet Jack! The very handsome Bull Arab who has stolen Dr Claireโ€™s heart! โค๏ธ
Jack is a super-friendly 6-year-old Bull Arab who came to see us after developing a right hind leg lameness. While investigating his lameness with X-rays, we also discovered a fractured tooth โ€” so Jack had a busy day at Marsden Vet! ๐Ÿฆท
His fractured tooth was extracted, and further investigation revealed that Jack had a ruptured cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) in his knee. This is a common cause of hindlimb lameness in dogs and, when the ligament is completely torn, surgery is often the best option to restore stability and get them back to their normal, active lives.
Jack returned to us for his TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) with our visiting surgeon, Dr Dion. ๐Ÿฆดโœจ
A TPLO involves surgically changing the angle of the top of the shin bone so that the knee becomes stable during weight-bearing, even without the damaged cruciate ligament.
Weโ€™re very lucky to have visiting surgeons like Dr Dion who can bring their advanced surgical skills and expertise directly to our clinic. This means our patients can have complex procedures performed by an experienced surgeon without always needing to travel to a referral hospital, while our familiar Marsden Vet team continues to care for them before and after surgery. ๐Ÿ’™
And while Jack might be looking forward to getting back to his normal adventures, Dr Claire canโ€™t wait to see him at all of his post-op checks! ๐Ÿ˜‚โค๏ธ
For now, itโ€™s plenty of rest, restricted activity and rehabilitation while that leg heals. We canโ€™t wait to watch this gorgeous boy get stronger and stronger! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฆด

Meet Lurch! ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’™
At a whopping 93 kg, Lurch is officially our biggest patient here at Marsden Vet! ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ•
This gorgeous 8-year-old Great Dane recently came in with a torn nail that was causing him quite a bit of discomfort. Because the nail needed to be removed properly and safely, Lurch had a little sedation to make the whole experience as stress-free and comfortable as possible.
And yesโ€ฆ finding a bed big enough for this gentle giant is always a challenge! ๐Ÿ˜‚
Thankfully, Lurch is now on the mend and weโ€™re hoping that nail will be the end of his giant-sized drama.
93 kg of Great Dane, 100% good boy. โค๏ธ

๐Ÿฆท Marsden Veterinary Surgery Dental Month ๐Ÿฆท

Who wants to receive $100-$250 off a dental procedure for their furfriend?

It all starts with a ๐Ÿฆท FREE Dental Check ๐Ÿฆท

- Why Dental Health Matters
You may not realize that more than 80% of dogs and 70% of cats over the age of three have some form of dental disease.

Just like us, plaque and tartar build up every day. Without treatment, this can lead to:
๐Ÿฆท Painful teeth and gums/tooth loss
๐Ÿคข Bad breath
๐Ÿ– Difficulty eating
๐Ÿฆ  Infection and Bacteria entering the bloodstream, potentially affecting the heart, liver and kidneys.
Pets are very good at hiding pain. They often continue eating even when their mouths are sore.
A professional dental assessment can identify problems before they become serious - and before your pet suffers in silence.

Does Your Pet Show Any of These Signs?
๐Ÿพ Bad breath
๐Ÿพ Yellow or brown tartar
๐Ÿพ Red or bleeding gums
๐Ÿพ Dropping food
๐Ÿพ Chewing on one side
๐Ÿพ Reduced appetite
๐Ÿพ Pawing at the mouth
๐Ÿพ Excessive drooling
๐Ÿพ Loose or broken teeth
If you've noticed any of these symptoms, it's time for a FREE dental check.

What Happens During a FREE Dental Check?
Our vets will:
โœ” Examine your pet's teeth and gums
โœ” Assess plaque, tartar and dental disease
โœ” Check for loose or fractured teeth
โœ” Provide an estimate for a dental procedure

Why Have a Professional Dental?
Professional dental procedures are performed under a general anaesthetic which allow us to:
๐Ÿฆท Take dental X-rays
๐Ÿชฅ Remove plaque and tartar above and below the gum line
๐Ÿฉบ Examine every tooth thoroughly
โœจ Polish teeth to slow future plaque build-up
๐Ÿ˜„ Improve your pet's comfort and quality of life

After a dental procedure you can help keep your pet's teeth and gums healthy at home by:
๐Ÿชฅ Brushing their teeth regularly using pet-safe toothpaste and adding water additives to their water daily
๐Ÿฆด Feeding approved dental diets or treats
๐Ÿงธ Providing veterinary-recommended dental chews
๐Ÿ“… Booking annual dental checks
Prevention is always easier - and more affordable - than treating advanced dental disease.

๐Ÿพ Meet Teddy, the little fluffball! ๐Ÿพ

Can we all take a moment to appreciate just how adorable this little guy is? ๐Ÿ˜

Teddy recently visited us for his vaccinations and microchip, and we're happy to report he was an absolute superstar! ๐ŸŒŸ He was so brave, enjoyed plenty of cuddles, and of course, earned lots of tasty treats for being such a good boy. ๐Ÿฆด๐Ÿ’™

Getting your puppy vaccinated is one of the best ways to protect them from serious and potentially life-threatening diseases while they explore the world. Microchipping is just as importantโ€”it gives your furry friend the best chance of being reunited with you if they ever wander off.

At Marsden Veterinary Surgery, we believe vet visits should be a positive experience. That's why we make every effort to ensure your pet feels safe, comfortable, and rewarded with plenty of treats, pats, and encouragement. We want them to learn that coming to the vet isn't scaryโ€”it's a place where good things happen! ๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿถ

Thank you, Teddy, for being such a brave little champ. We can't wait to watch you grow! โค๏ธ

๐Ÿ“ž Is your puppy due for their vaccinations or microchip? Give our friendly team a call on (07) 3200 6045 or book onlineโ€”we'd love to meet your newest family member!
