Officially meet Peach! 🍑💛
Yesterday we were planning on properly introducing our newest little member, but our plans changed when Peach’s IgG results came back extremely low.
Peach had what’s known as Failure of Passive Transfer (FPT), meaning she hadn’t absorbed enough vital antibodies from her mother’s colostrum in those crucial first hours of life. She appeared to be ticking all her boxes, no obvious concerns.
This can happen for several reasons, including delayed feeding, poor colostrum quality or inadequate antibody absorption.
Thankfully, this is something we can test for and treat! Plasma transfusions provide antibodies directly into the bloodstream, giving vulnerable foals the protection they need. And successfull treatment means they continue to grow and develop as any other healthy foal. No future complications.
Our little firecracker received just one bag of plasma, and her IgG made an incredible jump to over 1000! An amazing response, successfully correcting her antibody deficiency. 🥹
She’s now home, healthy, feeding beautifully and absolutely full of life! 🍑
It’s a great reminder of just how important neonatal IgG testing, proactive veterinary care and early intervention are. Even when a foal appears perfectly healthy, you can’t always see what’s happening beneath the surface.
A huge thank you to Naomi, Sharanne and the team for their incredible care, knowledge and time. We’re so grateful to have such wonderful vets looking after our horses. 💛
