🌧️ We had so much rain last week that all of our dogs turned into little mud monsters!

Quick question for assistance dog handlers:

Your assistance dog (or assistance dog in training) is covered in mud. What do you do before public access?

A) Head into the shops anyway, dogs will be dogs.
B) Wipe off the visible dirt.
C) Bath and blow dry before entering.
D) Skip the shops and train outdoors instead.

Correct answer: C or D.

A clean, well groomed dog is part of maintaining public access standards. Even if the mud doesn’t seem obvious, dirt can be left behind on floors and create a slip hazard for other members of the public.

Of course, assistance dogs are often needed regardless of the weather. On days when you don’t need to head out, enrichment activities at home can be a great way to keep your dog happy and engaged while staying clean.🐕

Here is a photo of Teddy a couple of weeks ago when he went to the vet for his vaccinations. We can confirm that he was a very good boy and received many treats! 🧸🐾

During a puppy’s critical development period, we want to carefully expose them to a wide range of environments, sounds, surfaces and experiences, while always making sure they are feeling safe, confident and comfortable.

This is exactly what we love to see from a pup this age. Calm, curious and able to take everything in without becoming overwhelmed. 🥰

Please take note that he does pull towards people but he is not allowed to go over and interact/jump/disrupt members of the public. It is important that we build confidence but we also never want to negatively affect other members of the public or workers. 😊

Perfect day for some training. 10 mins before recording this we got rushed by a barking, off leash dog with the owner yelling “don’t worry, he’s friendly”…. 🙄 Classic! Can confirm that Bear was his usual superstar self and stayed sitting so I could block the off leash dog while the lady came and retrieved her dog.

If it’s not an off leash area - keep your dog on lead.
If you don’t have recall - keep your dog on lead.
It’s not rocket science. 😉

Our dogs work hard, but they definitely play hard too. A balanced life is key to a happy, balanced dog. 🥰

There used to be a huge focus on puppies needing to meet “100 people before 12 weeks”. While the intention behind that advice was good, if socialisation isn’t done correctly it can actually overwhelm puppies and create long term stress or negative associations. 🧐

For us, socialisation is about safe and positive exposure while the puppy still feels comfortable and secure. Do our young puppies get pats from members of the public sometimes? Absolutely. But that depends on the person, the environment and how the puppy is feeling in that moment.

A little bit of pressure can help puppies learn and build confidence, but too much too soon can have the opposite effect.

Also, filming a puppy is super hard so sorry for the terrible video. We don’t put pups in a “position” at this age so he chose to lay down but then got up and laid down again after a while. 😅

Teddy is so good looking that we’re not sure if he is real or an AI generated dog. 🥹
Fun fact: Teddy is actually Bears half brother (they share the same dad), hence why we went with the “Bear” theme. 🧸

Thursdays are always a bit chaotic around here. 😅

A full crew today, a mix of our own dogs and client dogs in training, plus a bonus Border Collie getting stuck into some herding work. 🐾

Training a 7 month old pup is not as easy as this video makes it look.

Right now it’s a lot of settling, with short windows of loose leash walking.

You’re only seeing the highlight reel. We don’t have enough hands to film the chaos.

If your 7 month old feels like they’re falling apart, you’re not doing anything wrong. They’re just going through a massive developmental phase.
