FURCATION EXPOSURE

The most common reason for tooth removal. The furcation is the gap between the tooth roots that become exposed when the gum and bone erode. In healthy teeth this area is filled with periodontium (bone, gingiva etc).
Plaque and calculus builds up under the gum margin resulting in periodontal disease. The resulting inflammation results in erosion of the bone causing furcation and root exposure. When this happens we can probe between the roots of the tooth. This is impossible to keep clean and plaque/tartar recurs rapidly progressing periodontitis and pain. Extraction is required in all of these cases!

MOBILE TEETH

Mobile (loose) teeth in dogs generally need to be extracted because a mobile tooth is usually a sign that the supporting tissues and bone have been significantly damaged, most commonly from periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease destroys the bone and tissues holding the tooth in place. Once enough support is lost, the tooth becomes loose. A mobile tooth can move when the dog chews which can be painful.

Bacteria can accumulate around the tooth and underneath the gum, maintaining inflammation and infection. Once significant periodontal support has been lost, the supporting bone generally cannot regenerate enough to make the tooth stable again.

Removing diseased teeth reduces the chronic bacterial and inflammatory burden associated with advanced periodontal disease.
