As we wrap up this month, let’s talk dental care!
* Tooth brushing is the GOLD STANDARD. Brushing physically removes plaque before it hardens into tartar. Aim for twice daily, just like us humans. If you have a puppy it is best to start practicing now, but older pets can still learn - it may just take a bit longer. There are plenty of awesome videos online on how to desensitise dogs AND cats to tooth brushing!
* Dental diets are a great backup for time poor owners or for those pets that resent teeth brushing. The kibble is designed to be chewed and aid in “scraping” plaque off. Dental diets will NOT prevent your pet from dental disease, but can slow its progression. Our favourites are the Hills Prescription Diet T/D and Royal Canin Dental but there are lots of dental diets on the market! However,
* Look for the VOHC seal when choosing ANY dental products (chews/ rinses/ diets, ect.) This seal of approval means the product has been shown to reduce plaque and/or calculus. See the full list of approved products here; https://vohc.org/accepted-products/
