🐾✨ Frenchie Frenzy at Paws and More! ✨🐾
We had an overload of cuteness last week when a whole litter of French Bulldog puppies came in for their very first vaccinations – and yes, they were every bit as squishy, snorty, and sweet as you’d imagine! 🐶💉💕
While we LOVE their charming personalities and irresistible little faces, it’s also the perfect time to talk about something important for all flat-faced breeds — their breathing health.
Frenchies, Pugs, Boston Terriers, and other brachycephalic breeds (those with short, flat noses) are prone to a condition known as Brachycephalic Airway Obstruction Syndrome (BOAS). It affects their ability to breathe freely and can impact their quality of life as they grow.
🫁 What is BOAS?
BOAS includes several anatomical challenges like:
Narrowed nostrils (stenotic nares)
Elongated soft palate
Narrow windpipe (hypoplastic trachea)
Tissue obstruction in the airway
Some pups show mild symptoms, while others may need surgical intervention to breathe and play comfortably.
💡 Signs to watch for as your flat-faced friend grows:
• Noisy breathing (snorting, snoring, wheezing)
• Struggling with exercise or overheating easily
• Gagging, coughing, or vomiting after activity
• Tongue turning bluish during panting
• Fainting or collapsing in extreme cases
The good news? With early assessment and, if needed, BOAS surgery, we can often make a huge difference in your pet’s comfort and wellbeing.
💙 If your Frenchie (or other flat-faced friend) is showing any of these signs, we’re here to help. Book a check-up today — let’s keep those adorable noses breathing easy!
