Project Meow Geelong is a community-based cat welfare initiative focused on preventing suffering before situations reach crisis point. Through compassionate desexing support, kitten pathways and community outreach, we help protect cats, kittens and the people caring for them across Greater Geelong. HOW WE HELP
Cat Desexing Support

We provide low-cost, partially supported and flexible desexing pathways to help reduce unintended litters and improve long-term welfare outcomes for cats in our community. Kitten Club

Kitten Club supports mother cats and kittens through safe, compassionate pathways focused on protection, stability and prevention. Support may include nursery care, desexing, vaccinations, microchipping, parasite treatment, rescue support and safe homing pathways where appropriate. Our goal is to ensure kittens are protected, properly supported and safely placed before entering new homes. Community-Based Support

Project Meow is not a public shelter or veterinary clinic. We work alongside local vets, rescue groups and community partners to help create safe, realistic pathways for cats and families needing support. Every situation is different, and we aim to meet people with compassion, honesty and practical support wherever possible. OUR PROMISE

100% of funds raised through donations, fundraising and community support go directly toward veterinary care and feline welfare programs. Every cat desexed helps prevent future suffering, reduces pressure on shelters and rescues, and creates kinder outcomes for cats across our region.

FURBALL SEASON IS HERE 😹🧡

Fur on the couch, fur on your clothes… and a soggy surprise waiting for your bare foot.

A furball’s technical name is trichobezoar (say it: trick-oh-BEE-zor). Fancy name. Horrible thing to step on. The first time you see one, you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s a big furry turd. 😹 Then trying to get your head around the fact it is a furball and not even round! Crickey!

Cats swallow loose fur while grooming. Most passes through in their poo, but some collects into hairballs. Then comes the deeply undignified and stressful business of trying to evict that revolting tenant. This takes some heaving... distressing, awful heaving.

Here’s how to help:

🧡 BRUSH DAILY, ESPECIALLY DURING A HEAVY MOULT.

Gentle, short sessions remove loose fur before your cat swallows it. Long-haired cats may need extra grooming help. From grooming gloves to combs and brushes, choose tools suited to your cat’s coat and comfort.

🧡 ASK YOUR VET ABOUT PRODUCTS SUCH AS CATLAX.

These can help swallowed fur pass through the digestive tract. Follow your vet’s advice and the product directions.

🚨 REPEATED HEAVING IS NOT SOMETHING TO IGNORE.

Frequent hairballs, repeated vomiting, retching with nothing coming up, poor appetite, constipation or unusual tiredness need veterinary advice.

Those regular brushing sessions are looking pretty good now, right? 🧡

Hairballs can cause a life-threatening blockage. Paste cannot replace veterinary care for an unwell cat.

And that “furball” sound could actually be coughing, including from asthma. Difficulty breathing or open-mouth breathing means an emergency vet immediately.

The carpet can wait. Your struggling cat cannot. 💜

STILL A KITTEN. ALREADY ABLE TO BREED. 🩷

That tiny sweetheart asleep on your lap? Kittens can reach sexual maturity as early as FOUR MONTHS—around 16 weeks.

Looking like a baby doesn’t protect them from pregnancy or the risks that come with breeding.

🐱 WHEN CAN KITTENS BE DESEXED?

Our veterinary partners ask that kittens are:
🩷 OVER 1 kg in weight.
🩷 AT LEAST eight weeks old.
🩷 Healthy and assessed as ready for surgery by their vet.

Both age AND weight matter. Reaching one doesn’t cancel out the other.

PLEASE PLAN TO HAVE THEM DESEXED BEFORE FOUR MONTHS, with timing confirmed by your vet. Don’t wait for the first heat, spraying or wandering to tell you it’s time.

WHY SO EARLY?

Look at your little kitten. Now picture the adult tom down the road.

Cats breed because of instinct and hormones—not love, romance or a wish to start a family. A sexually mature kitten can mate with an adult cat. Related cats can mate too: brothers, sisters, parents and offspring.

Being related is not contraception.

For a young female, mating can be rough, and pregnancy places demands on a body that is still growing. For males, sexual maturity can bring roaming, fighting and injury risks.

They don’t understand the consequences. We do. That makes prevention our responsibility, NOT theirs.

🩷 THROUGH KITTEN CLUB, kittens receive essential veterinary care and are desexed before adoption, once they meet our veterinary team’s requirements—so their new families aren’t taking home another breeding cycle.

Keep undesexed cats safely contained and separated from other undesexed cats while waiting.
Hmm… keeping those hormones apart isn’t always easy, is it?

Desexing? One procedure. No future litters.

Have a kitten at home? Book ahead.

Love them enough to prevent the litter. 🩷

Kittens need the right path to a home—not the fastest or most convenient one.

Just because they’re eating solid food DOES NOT mean they’re ready to leave mum.

Weaning is a gradual process. Alongside their mother’s milk and comfort, mum and their littermates provide important opportunities to learn, play and develop. This time matters.

🩷 HOW LONG DO THEY NEED?

At least eight weeks with mum and their littermates, unless veterinary advice says otherwise. Some need longer. They must be fully weaned, healthy and ready for the next step—not simply old enough on the calendar.

No buts about it!

“But my friend loves them.”
“But my family wants one now.”
“But the kids love them.”
“But they’ll get so many cuddles.”

Love is a lovely beginning. But an adult’s or child’s excitement or desire must never take priority over a kitten’s development and needs.

If someone loves that kitten, they can love them enough to wait.

🩷 THAT’S WHERE KITTEN CLUB HELPS.

We have a dedicated, private nursery space, closed to the public, where we care for expecting mums, nursing mums and kittens. It gives these little families a safe space and their kittens a planned pathway through care, essential veterinary treatment and adoption.

Family and friends can still express interest in adopting. The kitten’s needs and readiness guide that process.

And before our kittens head home, there’s another important step: desexing, when they meet our veterinary team’s age, weight and health requirements.

MATTED FUR HURTS. 💔
Grooming isn’t just about furballs or looking fabulous for the household paparazzi.
Mats are tightly tangled clumps of fur that pull on the skin. They can make movement uncomfortable and hide irritated skin, wounds and parasites.
Imagine your hair being pulled every time you move—and being unable to do anything about it.
🧡 PREVENT THE KNOTS.
Brush and comb regularly with tools suited to your cat’s coat. Long-haired cats often need daily grooming; short-haired cats need checking too. Check behind the ears, under the legs, around the belly and back end. Keep sessions gentle, short and positive.
🧡 SUPPORT THEIR HEALTH.
A complete, balanced diet supports healthy skin and fur, but food won’t undo existing mats. Older cats, overweight cats and cats with pain or illness may struggle to groom themselves. A sudden change in grooming or coat condition deserves a vet check.
✂️ PUT THE SCISSORS DOWN.
Cat skin can be pulled up into a mat and is easily cut. Don’t yank, force a brush through tight mats or attempt a DIY shave.
🧡 GET HELP EARLY.
An experienced cat groomer can help with routine coat care.
Tight, extensive or painful matting needs a vet.
Safe removal may require sedation, alongside treatment for sore skin or an underlying health problem.

“They don’t like being brushed” means we need a better care plan. It doesn’t mean leaving them to hurt. PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT.
If your cat is badly matted, book the vet.
They depend on us to notice—and act. 🧡
