You are bringing home a new cat or kitten, did you know there will be a period of adjustment for them. Kittens tend to adapt a lot quicker than adults, but here are some ways you can help that transition.
On average:
First 24–48 hours – Most cats will hide, be very cautious, and explore only a little. They’re adjusting to the new smells, sounds, and sights.
1–2 weeks – Many cats begin to relax, explore more, eat normally, and interact with their humans.
1–3 months – Shy, anxious, or previously stressed cats may take this long (or longer) before they feel fully at home.
Some things that help speed up the adjustment:
Give them a quiet room at first, with food, water, litter, and hiding spots.
Let them explore gradually rather than giving access to the whole house straight away.
Stick to a routine for feeding and play to build security.
Offer gentle interaction, but don’t force contact—let them approach when ready.
Use calming aids like Feliway diffusers if they seem stressed.
😺 Generally, confident cats can feel at home within a week, while more timid cats may need a few months.
Day 1: Arrival
Prepare a quiet, safe room with litter box, food, water, toys, scratching post, and hiding spots.
Keep the carrier open so they can use it as a safe space.
Sit quietly in the room; let them come to you when ready.
Expect hiding, cautious exploring, and possibly not eating much right away (normal for day 1).
🐾 Days 2–3
Visit them regularly, but keep visits calm and predictable.
Offer food at regular times—hand-feed treats if they’re comfortable.
Speak softly and avoid loud noises.
Allow them to explore more of the room at their own pace.
🐾 End of Week 1
If they’re eating, using the litter box, and showing curiosity, open access to another room (one at a time).
Play short interactive games with toys (wand toys are great).
Continue offering hiding places in each space.
🐾 Weeks 2–3
Gradually expand their territory until they have access to the full house.
Establish a routine (feeding, play, quiet time). Cats feel safe with predictability.
Begin introducing them to family members or other pets slowly, using controlled, positive encounters.
🐾 1–2 Months
Most cats are now confident in their environment.
You should see normal behaviors: scratching, grooming, playing, asking for attention.
Build bonds with daily play + affection sessions.
🐾 2–3 Months
Even shy cats usually feel at home by this stage.
They’ll have chosen their favorite sleeping spots and routines.
Continue reinforcing positive behaviors and maintaining stability.
