The staring.
The head tilt.
Then suddenly… sprint mode.
Sometimes it only takes a few seconds before they are completely obsessed.

Why we do not dehydrate our mealworms

A lot of people ask us why we sell live mealworms instead of dehydrated ones.

For us, the answer is simple: we would rather keep them fresh, moving, and natural.

Dehydrating mealworms takes extra energy, extra processing, and extra handling, just to remove the moisture and movement that chickens naturally love.

Live mealworms give chooks more than just a treat.

They move, so chickens instinctively scratch, peck, chase, and forage. That makes treat time more exciting and helps keep them active, especially for backyard chickens that may not have endless space to roam.

They are fresh, not processed.
They contain natural moisture.
They usually get an instant reaction.
And they are great for hand-feeding, bonding, calling your flock back, or encouraging shy birds to come closer.

Mealworms are also naturally protein-rich, which makes them a useful treat during moulting or when chickens are growing new feathers. Feathers are made largely from protein, so extra protein and amino acids can be helpful during those demanding periods.

Dehydrated mealworms are convenient, and they have their place. But live mealworms offer something different: freshness, movement, moisture, enrichment, and a feeding experience that feels much closer to what chickens naturally enjoy.
