Lokabe Working Dogs

Fred organised an AUSDS trial on Brawlin Springs Cootamundra last weekend and it went extremely well. These trials require the dogs to compete in a yard, cattle and paddock trial (3 sheep in this instance), and are a really good test of a dog’s overall ability in all facets of farmwork. The location was excellent, as we had a clear view down the hill to watch the dogs work the paddock section, and everything else was close together. We were blessed with AMAZING weather and so it was a great way to spend the weekend.

Fred ran three dogs in the Level 2 and took our a trifecta, with Lokabe Tiger placing first, Lokabe Speedy placing second and underdog Lokabe Dusty II taking out third place.

Although during the organising of the trial I told Fred ‘never again’ (it was a LOT of work and he was pretty stressed bringing it all together), perhaps I will relent and we will host another in the future. The AUSDS continues to evolve and, we think, has an exciting future ahead of it.

Thanks so much to all the sponsors, judges, helpers and competitors, and to the Muttama Hall Committee for keeping us fed over the two days. It was a team effort across the weekend with everyone pitching in when needed, and we are incredibly grateful for that.

Well done also to Rod and Viv Cavanagh who have been running these trials for years and organised all the scoring and ribbons/trophies etc. We couldn’t have done it without you.

Wow! What a day! Today Team Lokabe headed to Yass for their annual yard trial and did not disappoint. Fred took out all four classes with four different dogs:

Lily won the Maiden
Tiger won the Novice
Dusty won the Improver
Speedy won the Open

Dusty also came fourth in the Open, and Lily fourth in the Novice.

I (Catherine) was the strapper for the finals, as Fred basically just ran one dog after another across the four finals in the two rings. And you can bet I was cursing that he’d decided to park at the bottom of the bloody hill 🤣

Lokabe Working Dogs – Patreon Launch

For anyone who may be interested, Fred has started a Patreon dog training page for Lokabe Working Dogs.

This page will mainly feature whatever training Fred is working on at the time, which may include starting pups, teaching more advanced exercises (eg head turn) and trial preparation. Members can ask questions through the chat function, and Fred will also respond with videos when helpful.

Our goal is to create a kind and respectful forum where people can:
• Ask training questions
• Discuss methods and alternatives
• Offer constructive criticism

To get things started, Fred will mainly be posting videos of Lokabe Tiger, working through our training steps from beginner level through to more advanced training over a 12-month period. Tiger is currently 21 months old. (The first few steps will be video of Lokabe Sully, as Fred didn’t start filming Tiger until he was a few steps in).

Indi and I got to hang out with Jack and Pesto from Muster Dogs today 😀

Day Two of is all done and I was even worse at taking photos than yesterday 😂 I did get this fabulous pic of Jack Kennedy of fame with Pesto and Indi hanging out together at my stand. Thanks so much !! Of the many photos taken, this was the best of the bunch, with Jack and I both looking reasonable and the girls both facing forwards and in focus. Getting them to both look in the same direction was apparently beyond our capabilities! Thanks to my Mum for taking the photos, and the random festival-goer who kindly helped to try and get Indi and Pesto to look at the camera 😂 And Jack, I hope the new book is as popular in your house as the first one 😊

Leo is a trained working dog who is a useful team member in all facets of stockwork. He is reasonably strong on cattle, backs and works in the yards confidently, and is a calm and easy dog to work when mustering sheep in the paddock. He is trial ready for someone to go on with, and has made two Maiden finals from four trials. Leo has sired quality pups that we have retained for our current work team.

Leo has been employed 😊
