🦷 Is Your Pet Hiding a Toothache? 🐶🐱
Did you know most dogs and cats show signs of dental disease by age 3? Just like us, pets need regular dental care to stay healthy — but unlike us, they can’t tell you when something’s wrong. Dental disease is one of the most common (and often overlooked) health issues in dogs and cats, especially as they age.
✨ What is dental disease?
It’s a build-up of plaque and tartar that leads to inflamed gums, infection, tooth loss, and even damage to internal organs if left untreated. It can be painful, but pets often suffer in silence.
🚩 Signs your pet might have dental disease:
🔹 Bad breath
🔹 Drooling or pawing at the mouth
🔹 Difficulty eating or chewing on one side
🔹 Red or bleeding gums
🔹 Loose, broken, or missing teeth
🔹 A sudden change in appetite or mood
🔹 A sudden change in weight

At our clinic, we offer professional dental scale & polish procedures, complete with full dental x-rays to assess the health of the teeth below the gumline. If needed, we can also perform tooth extractions to relieve pain and prevent further infection.
💤 These are day procedures performed under general anaesthesia, and most pets go home the same day — feeling fresher, happier, and healthier!
✅ Prevention is key! Regular dental checks and home care (like dental diets or brushing) can go a long way.

🐾 Exciting News from Puppy Preschool! 🐾

We have a little update to our Puppy Preschool team!

Our wonderful Nurse Jen will be stepping back from teaching Puppy Preschool classes for the time being. While you won't see her leading classes, Jen will still be around the clinic, continuing to care for our patients and support their families. We'd like to thank Jen for the care, enthusiasm and knowledge she has shared with so many puppies and their families over the years. ❤️

Taking over the lead trainer role is our amazing Nurse Ash, and we know you'll love getting to know her!

🐶 Meet Ash

Ash joined our team in 2023 after beginning her veterinary nursing career in 2020.

She has a real passion for surgical nursing and loves being hands-on caring for our patients during and after their procedures. Behind the scenes, you'll often find Ash making sure your pets are comfortable, loved, and receiving the extra TLC they need while recovering or feeling unwell.

Outside of work, Ash loves spending time at the beach with her two gorgeous Golden Retrievers, Reggie and Scottie. 🏖️🐕🐕

Ash is excited to meet all of our new Puppy Preschool families and help give your puppies the very best start in life through fun, positive training and socialisation.

Please join us in thanking Jen for everything she's done in Puppy Preschool and giving Ash a warm welcome into her new role! We know she'll do an amazing job helping your puppies build confidence, learn new skills, and have plenty of fun along the way. 💙🐾

⚠️ IMPORTANT UPDATE: H5N1 AVIAN INFLUENZA (BIRD FLU) CONFIRMED IN NSW ⚠️

The first case of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza (bird flu) in New South Wales has now been confirmed in a wild migratory seabird (a Giant Petrel) found near Hawks Nest on the NSW Mid North Coast. Authorities have advised that there is currently no evidence of spread to domestic poultry, companion animals, or wider wildlife populations, and the risk to human health remains low.

🐾 **What should pet owners do?**
• Keep dogs on a lead around beaches, waterways, parks and areas where wild birds gather.
• Do not allow pets to approach, sniff, eat or play with sick or deceased birds.
• Keep cats indoors where possible to reduce hunting of wildlife.
• Wash your hands after handling pets that have been outdoors.

🐦 **Signs of illness in birds may include:**
• Sudden death
• Weakness or lethargy
• Difficulty standing, walking or flying
• Tremors or neurological signs
• Difficulty breathing
• Swelling around the head or eyes
• Multiple sick or deceased birds in one location

❗ **If you find a sick or deceased wild bird:**
• Do NOT touch or handle the bird.
• Keep children and pets away from the area.
• Report it immediately to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on **1800 675 888**.

📞 **If your pet has had contact with a sick or deceased bird and subsequently becomes unwell, please contact our clinic promptly for advice.**

At this stage, there is no need for alarm, but vigilance and early reporting are essential to help protect our pets, wildlife and agricultural industries. We will continue to monitor updates and share important information with our community.

If you notice sick or dead birds or other animals, you should not touch them. If there are multiple dead birds or other animals, take photos or a video.Record your location and report it to the 24-hour Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

🐾 CATS HAVE NINE LIVES. YOUR VET ONLY HAS ONE. 🐾

Behind every consultation, surgery, emergency call and difficult conversation is a veterinary professional who cares deeply about the animals and families they serve.

But there is a mental health crisis in the veterinary profession that is costing lives.

In 2021, Dr Sophie Putland tragically died by su***de at just 33 years of age while working in the profession she loved. In the wake of this devastating loss, Sophie's family — Kate, Garry, Tom and Oliver — established Sophie's Legacy, now a registered charity dedicated to improving mental health and wellbeing within the veterinary industry.

The reality is confronting:
💔 Veterinarians are four times more likely to die by su***de than the general population.
💔 Around 50% of veterinarians show signs of burnout.
💔 56% of veterinary nurses have required mental health support.
💔 1 in 6 veterinary professionals have experienced suicidal thoughts.

Veterinary professionals dedicate their lives to caring for others. It's time we cared for them too.
