What is holistic vet care?
“Holistic” vet care means that we aim to address not only the physical, but also the mental and emotional health of your animal companions. As a holistic vet, I integrate conventional medicine with my training in Traditional Chinese medicine and natural medicine to provide a broad range of knowledge, skills and techniques to support the health of your animals. My focus i

s not just on treating disease - I am working toward wellness & good health for your pets. Feeding a natural, minimally processed, balanced diet is a corner stone of success.

Acupuncture for IVDD🐶
Acupuncture is a great treatment option for spinal disease such as IVDD. Acupuncture involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to stimulate healing and provide pain relief.

Research shows that acupuncture can assist recovery by:
🐾Relieving pain and discomfort, helping to reduce your dog’s discomfort and nerve pain without relying solely on medications;
🐾Reducing inflammation around the affected spinal discs by improving blood circulation. This can reduce pressure on the nerves, making your dog more comfortable and improve healing time; and
🐾Improving nerve function, to help restore lost bladder and bowel control, and to support our end goal of getting your dog standing and walking again.

Early treatment with acupuncture within the first 48 hours after IVDD signs develop improve the chances of recovery. Dogs who can feel deep pain have a good chance of recovering if managed carefully (more than 80%!). It is crucial to know the symptoms and act fast if you notice any risk factors.

If your dog is experiencing any signs, or if you have a dog prone to spinal disease, book a consultation with Dr Caroline to discuss what you can do to improve your dog’s mobility.

I am grateful for the great vet network I have in Newcastle 🙏💕

World Veterinary Day Today is dedicated to honouring the veterinary profession. Veterinary professionals stand out as among the most compassionate and altruistic individuals, facing the challenging responsibility of nurturing animals back to health from injury and illness, offering advice and wise council to animal guardians across the lifespan , including often through difficult end of life decisions.
Whilst Veterinary Medicine is one of most rewarding professions, it is also one of the most challenging, with vets over represented in the stats for poor mental health. We appreciate your kindness and understanding as we strive to do our best in an increasingly complex world.
Our team are honoured to help the animals of our community, and their humans, working together with other vets near and far to provide the best care possible. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to follow our passions and trusting us with the care of your furry family members.

💥IVDD 💥: there are more treatment options for spinal issues than you may think......

As a rehab vet, I see my role as the voice of reason and the voice of calm for those dealing with IVDD in their dog. Often owners feel like they are under immense pressure to make an overnight decision about whether or not to go to the specialist hospital for spinal surgery.
💥Spinal surgery is certainly one option, and may be recommended in more severe cases of IVDD when there is NO DEEP PAIN (ie can’t feel their toes). Spinal surgery is very expensive and there is a lengthy recovery period. It also does NOT guarantee a successful outcome.

💥Have you considered the option of conservative management?☯ This includes strict crate rest for several weeks and pain management with anti-inflammatory medications. In my practice, I use combination of acupuncture, laser therapy, herbal medicine and chiropractic in the treatment of IVDD, which improve patient outcomes.

Treating IVDD is a journey and often takes several months, even for dogs who have surgery. It is crucial to know the symptoms, and get onto them very quickly.
