Japan... 🇯🇵

If you know me, you know my camera is practically an extension of my arm. As a pet photographer, my eyes are always scanning the horizon for a furry face to capture—whether it’s a beloved domestic furbaby back home or an incredible native creature out in the wild.

So, when I found myself exploring the serene grounds of Nara, Japan, I was completely in my element.

I was walking among the moss-covered stone lanterns at a local temple ⛩️ when this beautiful deer poked its head out, perfectly framed and curious as to what I was doing. It was one of those fleeting, magical moments where time just stops, and I knew I couldn’t miss the shot.

No matter where I am in the world, the goal is always the same: capturing the unique spirit, curiosity, and beauty of the animals we share this planet with.

Even on holiday, I’ve got one eye on the scenery and both eyes looking for the local furbabies. Enter this absolute professional.

Forget high-tech security cameras; this gorgeous pup is on the clock, standing guard, and meticulously monitoring the tourist activity right outside their owner’s clothes shop. I love seeing how central dogs are to daily life here—whether they’re welcoming customers, sunbathing on limestone cliffs, or just supervising the piazza.

When the subjects are this handsome and the backdrop is a stunning Italian coastal town, how could I not stop and take a photo?

🐾 Sneak Peek: A Match Made in Furry Heaven 🐾

Before I officially traded my camera gear for my passport and jetted off to Europe and Japan, I had the absolute pleasure of spending the morning with two of the most wonderful souls you could ever meet.

Meet Gigi and Hendrix. ❤️

Gigi, a gorgeous 7-year-old Chocolate Labrador, was the absolute star of the photo session! Not only is she incredibly engaging and beautiful, but she’s also a dedicated service dog for one of her pawrents. A true Rock of Gibraltar and the ultimate companion. 🏛️✨

And then there’s Hendrix—a beautiful, friendly gentleman of a cat. Hendrix knew exactly what he wanted: step into the frame, get his handsome portrait taken, and promptly return to his well-earned sleep. Minimal effort, maximum charm. 😴👑

🧳The money shot!!

Don’t you just love the image of Hendrix and Gigi together with that vintage suitcase? It was the perfect nod to my upcoming travels, but honestly, these two stole the show.

📸 Sneak Peek: Meet Rover! 🐾

Stop what you’re doing, because this blonde bombshell is about to steal your heart. Everyone, meet Rover—the 3-year-old Long-Haired Dachshund who turned the Arboretum into his personal runway! 🌟

I’m still convinced Rover might be a professional model in a dog suit. Not only did he bring the perfect mix of high-energy playfulness, but he actually smiles on cue. (Yes, you read that right! Swipe to see that winning grin! ➡️)

A house 🏠 becomes a home 🏡.

This shoot was extra special because Rover is the very first furbaby for his pawrents. They told me they can’t imagine life without him now—he’s brought a level of joy and laughter to their home that they never knew was missing.

They are so excited to officially introduce this "gorgeous parcel of pleasure" to his human grandparents! 🎁🐶

Coming Soon: Meet Maverick! 🐾

Stop what you’re doing and say hello to the most handsome 12-month-old chocolate lab you’ve ever seen. Maverick recently joined me for a portrait session, and let’s just say he brought enough energy to power a small city! ⚡️

Between the zoomies and the wagging tail, we managed to capture that gorgeous chocolate coat and his huge personality. Here’s the "inside scoop" on this good boy:

Food is Life: I’ve seen food-motivated dogs before, but Maverick takes it to a whole new level. 🦴 A single treat basically turns him into a professional dog model.

The Boss of the House: He’s officially got his pawrents twisted around his little paw—and honestly, can you blame them? With those eyes, he gets whatever he wants.

Birthday Vibes: He’s officially 1 year old and ready to take on the world, one snack at a time.

I’m often asked where the best spots are for a session that feels both iconic and quiet enough for a dog to relax. While everyone loves a stroll near Lake Burley Griffin, I personally love the golden hour light at the National Arboretum or the hidden, leafy corners of the English Garden in Yarralumla.

Do you have a black dog? Do you struggle to get the perfect shot?

Capturing the perfect shot of a "void" (aka your beautiful black dog) doesn't have to be a mission impossible! 🐾✨

​Whether you’re worried about them looking like a blurry smudge or losing those soulful eyes in the shadows, we’ve got you covered. Here is how to make your dark-furred bestie shine like the star they are:

📸 Here are some pro tips for your shadow.

​Chase the Light: Avoid harsh midday sun, which creates "hot spots." Aim for Golden Hour or a bright, overcast day. Natural, soft light is a black dog's best friend!

​Focus on the Eyes: If the camera captures the glint in their eyes, the whole face wakes up. Tap your phone screen right on their eyes to set the exposure.

​Contrast is Key: Use a colorful or light-toned background (think green grass, a red brick wall, or a light tan rug) to make their silhouette pop.

​Under-Expose Slightly: Sometimes, phones try to "fix" the black fur by making it grey. Manually slide that brightness down a touch to keep those rich, obsidian tones true to life.

This four-year-old Blue Merle Border Collie didn't just show up for his session at the park; he owned it. While some pups need a little "treat motivation" to find their angles, Nacho was a natural-born pro. Meet Echo, a stunning two-year-old Chocolate Merle Border Collie with the most soulful eyes. 🐾✨

Echo started our session feeling a little shy and kept her guard up, but it was so rewarding to watch her slowly find her confidence. With a bit of patience (and plenty of high-value treats!), she began to relax and let her sweet personality shine through.

The most heartwarming part? Her incredible bond with her big brother. Echo was absolutely infatuated with him, constantly tracking his every move and looking to him for reassurance. There is something truly special about capturing that quiet, loyal devotion between siblings.
