This happy guy leaving the hospital today is Mac.

Mac was with us for 5 days due to tick paralysis. His humans rushed him to us when he was found collapsed, too weak to stand, regurgitating and having difficulties breathing.

A tick WAS found and Mac was quickly treated for tick paralysis! His treatment included mechanical ventilation to support his breathing, tick anti-serum, a full body clip to allow for ongoing tick searches, tick prevention treatment to kill any remaining ticks, intravenous fluids and antibiotics to treat his pneumonia.

He has recovered remarkably and was discharged today with instructions for strict rest.

The paralysis tick toxin is very dangerous. It affects the nerves, and can cause paralysis of the limbs, respiratory muscles, swallowing muscles and eyelids. If left untreated, tick paralysis can be fatal – usually due to respiratory failure and/or aspiration pneumonia.

Mac was super lucky. In our region, the warmth of Spring is when ticks come out in force. Make sure all your dogs and cats stay up to date with tick prevention and that you are doing regular tick checks – they can be difficult to find, especially in the early stages when they’re small and on long-haired animals.

We’re growing our referral nursing team and looking for experienced vet nurses who are keen to develop their skills with more complex cases, advanced diagnostics and procedures.

Whether you’re coming from GP, emergency or already have referral experience, there’s room to build a role around where you want your career to go.

Our opportunities are primarily across Surgery and Internal Medicine, with the chance to gain exposure to other referral services. For nurses who enjoy clinical variety, there may also be opportunities to work across both referral and Emergency and Critical Care.

Referral experience is highly regarded, but it’s not essential. Strong nursing foundations and a genuine desire to learn are what matter.

A great evening of practical HR insights and conversation at the Owens Collective in Islington last night.

Dr David Tabrett and Sally Groen had our small but engaged crowd hooked as they shared their experience and practical tips on hiring, interviewing, onboarding and retaining great people in veterinary teams.

A big thanks to Global Veterinary Careers for supporting the evening and helping us bring it all together.

It started with one missed breakfast.

For Dazza, a gentle 12 year old English Staffy, one small change to his normal routine turned into a life threatening emergency. Thankfully, his family trusted their instincts and brought him to AREC, where our Emergency and Surgery teams worked together to give him a second chance.

Today, Dazza is back where he belongs, enjoying life with his family, his Staffy sister Bronte, and cheering on the Newcastle Knights.

His story is a good reminder that sometimes the biggest warning sign isn't dramatic - it's simply that your pet isn't acting like themselves.

And, on the subject of singing the praises of our vets, another huge congratulations is in order!

CONGRATULATIONS to Dr Jamie Tam on passing her Membership exams in Emergency and Critical Care (MANZCVS)!

Anyone who has worked alongside Jamie knows how passionate she is about emergency medicine. From her days as a veterinary student, she's been drawn to critical care cases and has never stopped looking for opportunities to learn and grow.

Achieving Membership is no small feat. It represents years of study, clinical experience and commitment to advancing knowledge, all while continuing to care for patients in a busy emergency hospital.
