Have you ever wondered why we take paw prints of our patients?

Whether it’s a special keepsake made during their visit or a lasting memory created when we say goodbye, a paw print can hold so much meaning.

At AREC, our vet nurses take great care in creating these special mementos for families, and can include a paw print, nose print or a small clipping of fur. Our pictures show how much care is put into these gifts - for pets of all sizes, including beloved pet rats (last pic!).

We know how much pets mean to their families, and having something to remember them by can bring comfort during a difficult time. Something they can cherish.

We’re lucky to be able to create these special keepsakes for the families who trust us with their much-loved pets. Sometimes, it’s the smallest gestures that mean the most.

We had the gall to cover it all last night!

Dr Ferran Valls Sanchez and Dr Adheip Prabakaran took us through the gallbladder mucoceles journey from diagnosis to surgery, sharing their expertise on gallbladder disease and the treatment options available for these patients. Things got interactive too, with some audience participation via Slido to get everyone involved in the discussion.

We had a great group of local vets join us for an evening of learning, drinks, mingling and a little art appreciation at one of our favourite venues, Owens Collective in Islington.

Thanks to everyone who came along and continues to support our CPD program. We love bringing our veterinary community together for evenings like these!

There are definitely some perks to having our hospital right across from the Knights training ground and McDonald Jones Stadium, especially on a week like this.

Excitement is building as the Knights prepare for their biggest game in 25 years. Many of us remember 1997 and 2001, and we know just how much Newcastle loves getting behind its team.

So we’re getting into the spirit too and showing our support from across the road.

Of course, we hope you and your pets have no reason to visit us on Sunday night. But if you do find yourself in our reception, we’ll have the game playing live so you don’t have to miss the action while you wait.

Our staff and pets are really getting into it - how could we not?!

Today we had two ringtail possums brought into the hospital to be checked over, one a tiny baby and the other a little more mature. Thankfully, both were uninjured and were collected by wildlife carers, who’ll look after them until they’re ready to be released back into the wild.

If you find injured or distressed wildlife, please contact Hunter Wildlife Rescue as your first port of call rather than bringing them directly to AREC. Their wonderful volunteers are experienced in safely caring for local wildlife and, when veterinary assessment is needed, they’ll bring them to us or a local vet for care.

Here’s one of our incredible nurses, Ava, giving today’s little visitors plenty of gentle care before they headed off with their carers. How cute are they?!

The October long weekend is coming up, but our emergency team will be here around the clock.

AREC is open 24 hours a day throughout the long weekend, so if your pet becomes unwell or injured, you can access emergency veterinary care whenever you need it.

This is Oscar. He’s very happy in his owners’ arms after his 2-week check-up after surgery.

A couple of weeks prior, Oscar's groomer noticed a lump on the underside of his neck. His owners consulted their regular vet, who suspected a thyroid tumour and referred him to our surgery team.

On examination by our team and a CT scan, a left thyroid mass was detected. It could move around freely and wasn’t painful but it was causing Oscar difficulty with eating and swallowing. Thyroid tumours can be nasty and can eventually wrap around the oesophagus making it impossible to eat and drink, therefore a thyroidectomy was recommended to give Oscar the best chance of a good quality of life.

On the day of surgery, the mass was 8-9cm long and 3cm wide – you can see its size in the second picture. Oscar was a star during the surgery and recovered so well overnight that he went home the next morning bright and happy.

The pathologist reported the thyroid mass to be a malignant tumour but thankfully it was completely removed, the regional lymph nodes were all clear, and the CT scan showed no signs of spreading. Based on this, we expect Oscar to have a good quality of life for at least a couple more years!

This is a reminder to always get any abnormal looking or feeling lumps beneath your pet’s skin checked by your vet. You never know what it could be.
