Patient: Grace ๐Ÿด๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿฉบ

Grace sustained a large laceration in the paddock. She ran into the handle of a gate which ripped open her side. Thankfully, the injury was promptly noticed by her lovely owners. Newcastle Equine Centre ambulatory team responded immediately. The wound was assessed, clamped and debrided. Grace was the best patient. She stood calmly as the team repaired her side. Over the next few weeks her recovery progressed smoothly. Her owners kept the team up to date with her progress with weekly photos. The wound closed beautifully leaving only a faint scar as a reminder of her resilience . Grace is back to full activity, healthy and happy. This shows that even scary looking wounds can heal!

Patient: Hanna - Did you guess the diagnosis?๐Ÿด๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿฉบ

For those of you who diagnosed a slab fracture of the 3rd carpal bone you are correct! Little Hanna not only had a fracture, but the middle carpal joint was infected due to the communicating wound. Hanna underwent arthroscopy to flush the joint and remove any infected tissue. The fractured piece of bone was also found to be necrotic and was removed. Hanna was then treated in hospital for about 2 weeks with broad-spectrum antibiotics, repeat joint flushes and injections with antibiotics, and luckily responded very well! Check back in tomorrow for her final update!

Patient: Hanna ๐Ÿด๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿฉบ

Hanna is a 2 year old Miniature Donkey who came to us with a chronic wound and lameness of the left carpus. She had been treated in the field initially by her local vet, but then was referred to NEC when the wound and lameness didn't improve.

When she arrived she was immediately assessed by our team and had radiographs and ultrasound of the joint performed. What can you see on the xrays? Check back in tomorrow and we will share her diagnosis and the treatment plan she underwent thanks to the dedication of her lovely owners!

Pre-Mature Foal Series: What are the common problems with a pre-mature foal? ๐Ÿด๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿฉบ

Premature foals are often very weak, and may have a weak suckle reflex. They have difficulty regulating their body temperature and energy stores, so are more prone to hypothermia and hypoglycaemia.

Their organs are immature, so they can have associated issues such as difficulty breathing, colic or diarrhoea, and problems with their kidneys. Premature foals also often have musculoskeletal issues, including tendon laxity and angular limb deformities.

Additionally, they may have incomplete ossification of the bones in their knees and hocks, because these are the last bones to ossify. If a foal is premature, x-rays should be taken to assess for this. Foals with incomplete ossification can survive but the athletic prognosis is poor as weight bearing causes bone crushing and juvenile arthritis.

Premature foals are also at higher risk of common problems and conditions that we see in foals, including sepsis and failure of passive transfer. There are multiple factors that can predispose premature foals to failure of passive transfer, from the foal being too weak to suckle, to the mare not producing adequate colostrum, so this is particularly important to monitor.

Premature foals can require very intensive care. Prognosis depends on the degree of immaturity, the cause of prematurity, and any complications which develop. The best chance for survival is prompt veterinary assessment.

Here at Newcastle Equine Centre, we have an experienced and dedicated internal medicine team and neonatal intensive care facilities to care for sick foals. If you see any signs of early labour in your mare, or have a newborn foal showing any signs of prematurity or dysmaturity, contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns about your mare and/or foal leading up to her due date. Give us a call on (02) 4927 6135 ๐Ÿด๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿฉบ

Emergency plans are important when owning a horse ๐Ÿด๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿฉบ

All emergencies can happen unexpectedly leaving you little time to make decisions about how to evacuate or care your animals when events develop rapidly.

While we canโ€™t anticipate every situation, having a bushfire plan, a flood plan and a medical emergency plan can be important for the welfare of your horse and save you time when decisions have to be made at a fast pace.

Do you have a float available or travel options for evacuating?

Do you have a backup plan in a medical emergency to get your horse to an equine hospital for treatment if a vet cannot come to you?

Now is the time to plan so you have it when you need it.

For advice on your emergency plan, please donโ€™t hesitate to contact us on

Our staff are happy to advise you.

Pre-Mature Foal Series: What causes a pre-mature birth? ๐Ÿด๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿฉบ

There are many reasons for pre-mature birth and the cause is sometimes unknown.

Any mare with a high risk pregnancy, such as placentitis, is at risk for a pre-mature foal. Any mares with known issues, or problems with previous pregnancies, should be closely monitored in late stage pregnancy. Mares can also give birth prematurely if they are systemically sick or under severe stress, or if there is a congenital problem with the foal.

If you have any questions or concerns about your mare and/or foal leading up to her due date. Give us a call on (02) 4927 6135 ๐Ÿด๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿฉบ
