Sometimes it's best to let a dog do the teaching!

Xena (the brown Staffy mix) is very excited around other dogs which leads to her lunging, barking and grooming at other dogs. This behaviour is largely due to frustration.

During her lesson this week we allowed her to interact with Zip (our youngest Border Collie). Just before this clip they had been playing nicely but Xena got a bit too excited and Zip decided it was time to stop play. Xena quickly settled and mimicked Zip's calmness.

All 3 of our dogs have helped other dogs this week learn about polite interactions, not all involved play though!

We could not do this job as well as we do without our team of dogs! Having them helps so many of our clients develop confidence in handling their dogs around other dogs and helps their dogs have positive and appropriate interactions with dogs!

How clever is little Sasha? During her lesson this week we started teaching a go around the cone and this was her after only a few minutes of learning it!

Brain work like this is so great for dogs! It gives them a job to do, engages their brain and helps them with problem solving!

If I only have a few minutes to do something with my dog I will always pick trick training or some form of mental stimulation every time!

Baxter the Great Dane puppy worked on being calm around other dogs in his lesson this morning.

This much overlooked skill is so important to teach puppies! It makes things like cafes, vet visits and park trips so much more enjoyable!

Monday Check In!

What did you get up to on the weekend?

We had a great one! Fizz gained a pass in the UD ring winning a 2nd place followed by another great run winning 3rd place but no passing score sadly. Zip also competed in the open ring, she placed 3rd in one trial but didn't pass in either trial due to one mistake in each attempt.

Love that ready cue! Having solid cues to tell your dog when to be in what mode is so important.

For our dogs we teach them that calm and switched off is the default behaviour. But when we ask for drive we say 'are you ready?' and we show our dogs that this is the time for play and drive.

In this video you see Zip switch from off to on at the ready cue. Notice the difference in her 'heeling' between the two modes.
