It’s shaping up to be a particularly bad tick season!

We’ve been seeing an increase in paralysis tick cases at the clinic, with more local pets also needing emergency treatment at AES after hours.

After a warm winter and wet start to spring, ticks are certainly making their presence felt!

Something many owners don’t realise is that ticks can be carried into suburban backyards by possums and bandicoots. Even pets that rarely leave home can be at risk.

Banjo the Labradoodle was all smiles with Nurse Chloe when he came in for his annual flea and paralysis tick prevention injection, providing 12 months of protection. 🐶

Whatever prevention you choose, please keep your pet up to date.

Tick paralysis is life threatening. If your pet shows signs of weakness, wobbliness or breathing difficulties, seek veterinary attention immediately.

Love wildlife? Have a little time to spare? 🐨🦉🐢🦘

At Daisy Hill Vet, we regularly see injured and orphaned native animals, and we’re reminded just how much our wildlife relies on the kindness of volunteers.

Unfortunately, wildlife rescue organisations are struggling to find enough volunteers, and more helping hands are desperately needed.

You don’t need experience to make a difference! Whether it’s rescuing or transporting injured animals, answering wildlife rescue calls from home, or training to become a registered wildlife carer, there are plenty of ways to help.

If you’re retired, working part-time or simply have a few spare hours, why not get involved?

There’s always something new to learn in veterinary medicine! 🩺

Over the weekend, Dr Julian attended a Veterinary Ultrasound & Basic Echo workshop, further developing his ultrasound skills with plenty of hands-on practice.

Ultrasound has become such an important part of veterinary practice. It allows us to look inside the body in real time, helping us investigate everything from abdominal problems to heart conditions. It’s particularly valuable in emergencies, when every minute counts and a patient may be too unwell to move for X-rays. A quick ultrasound can provide vital information to help guide our next steps.

Continuing education is something we really value, and it’s always great to bring new skills and knowledge back to the clinic.

Halloween is just around the corner and things are starting to get a little strange at Daisy Hill Vet! 🎃🦛

Our hardworking blood rocking mixer helps us process over 20 blood samples a day, making it a real hippopotamus-must in our busy clinic!

At least it’s still pulling its weight around here! 😂

Meet Daisy, a gorgeous 2½ year old Golden Retriever.

Daisy recently came in to see Dr Julian for a laparoscopic spey, also known as keyhole surgery.

For larger breeds like Golden Retrievers, there is growing evidence supporting delaying desexing until they are physically mature and their growth plates have closed. The ideal timing can vary depending on the breed and individual dog.

Rather than a traditional spey, Daisy had a laparoscopic procedure. Using a tiny camera and specialised instruments, Dr Julian was able to remove her ovaries through just a couple of small incisions.

The benefits? Less post operative pain, smaller wounds and generally a quicker return to normal activity compared with traditional surgery.

For an active girl like Daisy, that’s a pretty big advantage!

Today is Vet Nurse Day, and we’re celebrating the people who notice the little things, keep a close eye on our patients and offer comfort when everything feels unfamiliar.

There’s so much knowledge, skill and kindness behind every cuddle. We’re very lucky to have this team. 💚

Have you met nurse Ruby yet?

Ruby joined Daisy Hill Vet a month ago, and we’ve loved having her settle into our team!

Originally from New Zealand, she is a qualified veterinary nurse with more than four years of experience in a busy mixed animal practice. She brings a lovely calm and kind nature, along with experience in surgical nursing, anaesthetic monitoring, dental care and helping pets through recovery.

Outside work, Ruby enjoys keeping active, going to the gym and playing hockey. 🏑

At just 17 weeks old, Kenai the gorgeous German Shepherd came in to see Dr Julian for a dental procedure after a problem was picked up during his puppy vaccination health check.

One of Kenai’s baby canine teeth had erupted in the wrong position and was digging into his gum. Anyone who has been on the receiving end of a teething puppy will know just how sharp those little baby teeth can be!

The tooth was surgically removed to stop it causing him any more discomfort and to give his adult canine the best chance of coming through in the right position.

Kenai was an absolute sweetheart for his visit and took everything in his stride. With those paws and ears, we think he has a little bit of growing left to do!

🐾 FOUND – MINIATURE DACHSHUND 🐾

We’ve had a 6 month old Miniature Dachshund handed in to the clinic. She is microchipped, however unfortunately the contact details linked to her microchip haven’t been updated.

She is an absolute sweetheart and we’re sure someone must be missing her. ❤️

If you’ve been into the clinic recently, chances are you may have already met Leith, who joined our nursing team back in July.

Originally from New Zealand, Leith came to Daisy Hill Vet after working in busy companion animal practices across the Tasman. She originally started a Bachelor of Nursing before deciding that veterinary nursing was where she really wanted to be.

Leith particularly enjoys anaesthesia, caring for hospital patients and nurse consultations. She has a lovely calm nature and has fitted into our team incredibly well!

Outside of work, Leith has been making the most of her move and exploring South East Queensland. She’s settling into Australian life nicely, although she’s still keeping a respectful eye out for our snakes and spiders! 🐍🕷️
