🍂 Autumn Laminitis – A Hidden Seasonal Risk

Many horse owners associate laminitis with lush spring pasture, but autumn can be just as dangerous.

After rain following dry conditions, pastures often re-shoot rapidly, producing fresh growth that is high in soluble sugars and non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs). When horses consume excess sugars, it can trigger an insulin surge and metabolic disturbance that damages the hoof lamellae, leading to laminitis or founder.

⚠️ Why autumn can be risky:
• Rain after dry periods stimulates rapid pasture regrowth rich in sugars.
• Cool nights and warm days can cause sugars to accumulate in grass leaves.
• Overweight horses, ponies, and those with Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) or insulin resistance are especially vulnerable.
• Even short or stressed pasture can store sugar reserves, increasing laminitis risk.

🐴 Horses most at risk:
• “Good doers” or easy keepers
• Overweight or cresty horses and ponies
• Horses with EMS or insulin resistance
• Horses with a previous history of laminitis

✔ Management tips to reduce risk:
• Monitor pasture growth carefully after autumn rain
• Limit grazing time on lush or rapidly growing pasture
• Maintain healthy body condition and weight
• Provide low-NSC forage and balanced nutrition
• Consider grazing management strategies such as restricted turnout or a grazing muzzle where appropriate

Laminitis can develop very quickly, so early prevention and careful pasture management during seasonal changes are essential.
