Meet Milton 🧡

Milton was adopted through NRAS by one of our nurses, and today he stopped by the clinic for a little visit. He got tired after all the excitement, but safe to say he still stole every heart (and probably everyone’s attention too!)

We absolutely love seeing our NRAS babies thriving in their forever homes. 🐾

Nurse appreciation: Congratulations to our wonderful nurse Julie! 🐍

Julie has proudly completed the Australian Reptile Academy of Venomous Snake Handling Course, expanding her knowledge and skills in the safety of handling venomous snakes and the application of appropriate first aid.
She was able successfully handle a Red Belly, Eastern Brown and a Inland Taipan ( which is the most venomous in the world )

While our clinic does not treat reptiles, this training means Julie is better equipped and prepared to safely assist if a venomous snake is encountered and to provide immediate first aid.

If you find an injured, diseased, orphaned or displaced native reptile or other Australian wildlife, we recommend contacting Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital in Lennox Head. They provide expert veterinary care for native Australian wildlife and are a fantastic local resource for our community.

Brave Jojo, came into Ballina Vet Hospital last week after becoming hooked by a large fish hook that had become lodged deep in her upper lip. Thankfully Dr Georgia was able to carefully remove it and Jojo is on the road to recovery💙
While we are so happy Jojo is okay, this is an important reminder for our local community.

If you’re fishing around Ballina’s beaches, rivers or waterways, ( or anywhere! ) please dispose of old fishing hooks/ tackle and bait responsibly. A discarded hook can cause serious injuries to curious dogs, wildlife and even people. This could have been much worse for Jojo.
Dogs explore the world with their noses and mouths, making them especially vulnerable to hidden hooks left in the sand or grass.

If your pet ever gets a fish hook caught in them:
Don’t try to pull it out.
Don’t cut the line and leave it.
Keep your pet as calm as possible and seek veterinary attention immediately.

A few seconds spent disposing of fishing gear properly can save an animal from pain, surgery and a very frightening experience.
