What has Ralph been snacking on?

After investigation, our amazing Surgery Team and Dr Steph discovered that Ralph had decided his owner’s headphones looked a little too tasty!
Thankfully, our team was able to safely remove them with an e***a, avoiding the need for surgery.

Ralph is now feeling much more comfortable although his owners are now one set of headphones down!

A friendly reminder: Small household items like earbuds, batteries and other electronics can be extremely dangerous if swallowed. If you think your pet has eaten something they shouldn’t, don’t wait, give your vet team a call on 9524 1466.

Take a look at some of the fun sensory activities our Puppy School class enjoyed

Keeping your dog’s mind active is just as important as keeping their body moving!

Sensory enrichment gives puppies and dogs the chance to use their natural instincts to sniff, explore, solve problems, and discover new things. These activities help build confidence, reduce boredom, relieve stress, and can even prevent unwanted behaviours that often come from a lack of mental stimulation.

Some easy enrichment ideas include:
-Scatter feeding in the grass
-Snuffle mats or sniffing games
-Food puzzles and treat-dispensing toys
-Cardboard boxes filled with safe toys or treats to explore
-Introducing new sights, sounds, textures, and scents in a positive way

Just 15–20 minutes of mental stimulation can leave your pup feeling happy and fulfilled!

🐴💙 We’re Only Human.

Dr Jack and Dr Lance were proud to be at the Bain Fallon Memorial Lectures this week, where they had the opportunity to see Sophie’s Legacy’s new “We’re Only Human” campaign being shared with the equine veterinary community.

This campaign is the vision of Sophie’s Legacy, with the valued support of Randlab and the driving force of fellow equine Dr James Meyer. It is the result of an enormous collaborative effort from many passionate people and organisations, all working towards a shared goal of raising awareness around mental health within the equine veterinary profession.

We are incredibly proud to see one of our own veterinarians, Dr Sarah Cook, featured as the face of this campaign, alongside one of our much-loved patients, Numerus Clausus from Dynamik Stallions. Sarah is a passionate advocate for mental health within the veterinary profession, making her involvement in this campaign particularly special for our team.

A huge congratulations to everyone involved in bringing this important initiative to life. We are so grateful for campaigns like “We’re Only Human” that help create awareness, encourage open conversations, and remind those within our profession that seeking support is a sign of strength.

The equine veterinary profession is incredibly rewarding, but it can also be physically demanding, emotionally challenging, and mentally exhausting. By shining a light on these challenges and breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health, initiatives like this help foster a more supportive and compassionate profession for everyone.

A very special visitor stopped by the clinic this week! 💙💛

We loved catching up with our wonderful nurse, Demi, who popped in to say hello while on maternity leave, bringing along her gorgeous little boy, Wyatt. Of course, no visit would be complete without saying hello to Cloud, our much-loved resident mare. 🐴💕

We certainly miss having Demi around the clinic, but it has been so lovely to see her enjoying this special chapter with her growing family. It was wonderful to catch up, meet Wyatt, and spend some time together before we welcome Demi back.

🐾 Obie: A Life and a Leg Spared

Cancer doesn't always mean amputation. It doesn't always mean euthanasia.

When Obie, a beautiful Siberian Husky, was diagnosed with a soft tissue sarcoma (STS) on the dorsum of his left pes, his family understandably feared the worst.

Soft tissue sarcomas are locally invasive tumours, and when they occur on the lower limb there is often very little spare skin available after tumour removal. In many cases, amputation may be recommended to achieve complete tumour excision.

But every patient deserves an individual assessment.

Our goal was to completely remove Obie's tumour while preserving his limb. We achieved complete surgical excision with histologically clear margins, including the deep margin adjacent to the extensor tendons.

The surgery left a substantial skin defect, which we reconstructed using a free skin graft harvested from the lateral thorax. Skin grafts over the pes can be technically demanding, but with meticulous surgical technique and dedicated postoperative care, Obie's graft healed beautifully.

The pathology report confirmed complete tumour removal with clear margins, giving Obie an excellent chance of long-term local tumour control—while keeping full use of his leg.

Cases like Obie's remind us that advances in veterinary surgical oncology mean that limb-sparing surgery is sometimes possible, even in locations once considered impossible to reconstruct.

A huge thank you to Obie's family for entrusting us with his care. We couldn't be happier to see him back on all four paws.
