I wanted to share some important information about puppy school.

Over the last few weeks, we’ve received several calls from concerned new puppy families who have been advised by their veterinarian not to attend puppy school until their puppy is fully vaccinated — and in some cases, to wait TWO WEEKS after the final vaccination!

As a veterinarian myself, I find this incredibly disappointing. Despite everything we now know about puppy socialisation and sensitive learning periods, this misinformation is still being given to families with young puppies.

Please know that waiting until after vaccinations are complete can leave it far too late for many puppies to comfortably adjust to new experiences, environments, people, and other dogs during this critical developmental stage.

The Australian Veterinary Association advocates for puppies to attend reputable puppy classes before they are fully vaccinated, provided appropriate hygiene and safety protocols are in place.
Early socialisation is essential for supporting confident, resilient, and well-adjusted dogs.

If you’re unsure whether puppy school is right for your puppy, speak with a qualified trainer or veterinarian who understands the importance of early behavioural development alongside disease prevention.

At Dogs United, Dr Rachel — veterinarian at Foothills Animal Hospital-WA — runs puppy school alongside Kelby, our IMDT Distinction-qualified trainer. Rest assured, you and your puppy are in good hands.

Puppies aged 8–16 weeks are in a very special stage of life. This critical developmental period is the perfect time to introduce them to new experiences, build confidence, and lay the foundation for positive behaviour.

Our classes focus on early learning, socialisation, and developing essential life skills in a safe, nurturing, and fun environment.

“Chewy’s” (now known as Leona 🩵) update 🐶🐾

As many of you may have seen, this gorgeous little girl came into our clinic as a lost dog, with some unfortunate injuries to one of her hind legs.
From the moment she arrived, Chewy was full of love and in such high spirits that our team at Foothills quickly became very attached to her and wanted to do everything we could to help.
We scanned her for a microchip, but sadly she wasn’t chipped. We also shared her on our Facebook lost and found pages, however no owners came forward.

Thanks to your generous donations and support, we were able to carry out the necessary testing. Unfortunately, it was determined that the injury to her back leg meant amputation was the best option for her long-term comfort and quality of life.

She is now on pain relief, and the team at Staffy & Bully Rescue have kindly taken her into their care. Once she has recovered from her surgery, they will help find her the loving home she truly deserves.

Moments like this remind us how incredible our community is when it comes together to support animals in need, and we are so grateful for each and every one of you.

If you would like to help by donating towards Chewy/Leona’s surgery, you can contribute to our Care Fund by visiting the clinic or calling us on 9497 7488.

Thank you again for your kindness and support 🩵🐾
