As individuals across the country [and even the globe!] begin to finalize preparations for the International Boerboel Show, hosted by the South African Boerboel Breeder's Society at the Bloemfontein Show Grounds [June 13th - 14th], many people across the city have begun asking about this fascinating breed - and My City is happy to answer!
The boerboel, bred by resilient farmers and shaped by generations of companionship, has slowly become a powerful symbol of South African heritage, loyalty, and the tenacity with which our people approach fundamental aspects of survival, like protection. Even though they're one of the largest breeds on the planet, these fierce guard dogs possess incredibly dignified demeanors - and even though they were bred to be aggressive defenders, they're fully capable of distinguishing friend from foe.
A review by Alyssa Anderson explains that, "...in fact, these dogs are cuddly enough to be used as therapy dogs, in spite of the fact that so many say they’re not right for every home."
Like every other landrace breed, the Boerboel is a local variety that has evolved through adaptation to a specific geographic region and its unique environment - and continues to be characterized by greater genetic diversity compared to the standardized breeds that have developed through a combination of influences over time.
