Tick Fever Alert: Babesia & Ehrlichia in Dogs ⚠️

We’ve been seeing a spike in tick-borne diseases lately, even though it’s winter. Dogs as young as 10 weeks are testing positive for Babesia, and some cases have been severe.

Why are ticks still around in winter? ❄️
Ticks don’t die off just because it’s cold. In Gauteng, winters are mild enough for ticks to survive by hiding in warm spots like kennels, bedding, and garden shrubbery etc. Even a few warm days can get them active again - which means your dog is still at risk year-round.

Babesia is a blood parasite, transmitted by ticks that destroys red blood cells, leading to anemia, weakness, and if left untreated, death.

Signs to watch for include:
-Pale or yellow gums
-Lethargy or collapse
-Dark, reddish-brown urine
-Loss of appetite
-Fever or swollen glands

Treatments will involve medication (prescription only) to kill off babesia parasites in the blood, supportive care for anaemia and dehydration etc. And if anaemia is severe enough, a blood transfusion.

Canine Ehrlichiosis is another tick-borne disease that affects white blood cells and the immune system.
Symptoms can overlap with Babesia and may include:
-Bruising or nosebleeds
-Eye issues (like conjunctivitis)
-Limping or joint pain
-Weight loss
-Swollen limbs
-Fever and general tiredness

Please don’t rely on tick dips, shampoos or powders alone. They may help temporarily, but they don’t offer long-term protection and may miss ticks hidden deep in coats or other crevices.

Use vet-recommended tick preventatives like Bravecto or NexGard. These are safe, effective, and provide lasting protection against both ticks and fleas. Puppies can start tick prevention from as early as 8 weeks, depending on the product. Ask your vet staff what the best product would be to use on your pets.

If your dog is showing any of these symptoms or you’ve noticed ticks recently, it’s best to get them checked. Early treatment can make all the difference. The testing for babesia is often as simple as a blood smear in consult.

🐾💛 Ryan the Gentle Giant 💛🐾

Meet Ryan, our beloved clinic cat — and the softest soul you’ll ever meet. While most male cats keep their distance, Ryan does the opposite: he becomes a gentle guardian to any stray kitten that comes through our doors. 🐱🧡

What’s truly special? These kittens were timid, unsure, and hesitant with humans — flinching at touch and curling up in corners. But the moment they’re near Ryan, their entire body language shifts. They soften. They relax. They feel safe.

He grooms them, curls up beside them, and teaches them that the world can be kind. It’s the kind of comfort that no medication or socializing trick can replicate. Just pure, patient love.

We’re thrilled to say that every one of these kittens has now been adopted into loving homes! Thank you to everyone who supports, shares, and chooses adoption.

We’ve made multiple attempts to locate his owner, including posting on local lost-and-found pages, checking for a microchip, and reaching out to nearby clinics — but no one has come forward. He appears to have been living as a stray for some time.

🐱 Tuxedo Girl – This fancy little lady is full of sass and charm. She's playful, curious, and already very naughty!

🐾 Tabby & White Girl – Sweet as pie with the prettiest markings, this kitten is a snuggly explorer who loves to stare into your eyes and melt your heart.

As you can see, these two are a bonded pair and despite having 3 brothers, they have become best friends. It would be wonderful if they could go together but separate homes will be considered.

Male Yorkie picked up in Kelvin street, Lynnwood Glen on Friday last week. He is obviously loved but unfortunately there is not tag on his collar and he is not microchipped.
He is safe with us for the time being but we will only be able to keep him for a short while.
