"We noticed a saggy belly and some heavy breathing. Have you been eating underwear again?"

Things your doctor wouldnʼt say to you but we as vets sometimes say to our patients. Pets get lifted like Simba, baby-talked, and paid in treats while your GP probably lectured you about your cholesterol.

Human doctors often get to ask where it hurts but we as vets can only go by,ˮ patient growls, winces or bites when I touch there.ˮ We as vets are grateful to be able to serve a variety of species in a vast variety of ways, but it’s important to remember veterinary medicine is very different to human medicine.

Many people believe that euthanasia must be the most difficult part of veterinary care.

It is emotional. It is deeply sad. But it is not simply about loss. For our patients, it can also bring relief, comfort and peace when their bodies can no longer carry on without suffering.

As veterinary professionals, we know how heavy this decision feels for pet owners. That is why we believe it is important to speak about it with honesty, compassion and care.

Before you leave, make sure your pet’s food, chronic medication, vaccinations, tick and flea protection, and travel essentials are packed and ready.

If your pet will be staying at a kennel, confirm in advance which vaccinations or documents are required.
