Diabetes mellitus is a condition where your petโ€™s pancreas no longer produces enough insulin, an important hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. Dr. Stelouise from Strandloper Animal Clinic in Hartenbos explains what diabetes means for your petโ€™s overall health and how it can affect their daily life.

๐–๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐ก๐š๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ž๐ง๐ฌ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐š ๐ฅ๐š๐œ๐ค ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ข๐ง๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง? In pets with diabetes, the pancreas no longer produces enough insulin. Without insulin, glucose (sugar) cannot move from the bloodstream into the bodyโ€™s cells to be used for energy. As a result, glucose levels in the blood become abnormally high. Eventually, the excess glucose spills over into the urine, causing your petโ€™s urine to contain glucose as well. Because the bodyโ€™s cells arenโ€™t getting the glucose they need for energy, the body starts using other โ€œbackupโ€ methods to produce energy, such as breaking down fat. Unfortunately, these alternative processes create toxic by-products that can make your pet very sick over time.

Ontmoet Saartjie, 'n regte klein "sweetie-pie"! 'n Wag by die Langeberg Mall het klein skree geluidjies gehoor en dit gevolg tot in 'n asdrom. When they unpacked a whole lot of boxes from the bin, they found this beautiful, tiny kitten in the bottom of the bin. Gelukkig was haar nuwe pappa en mamma byderhand en het haar onmiddellik huis toe geneem en begin versorg.

This chronic, degenerative joint disease causes pain and stiffness, making movement difficult.
