It is with heavy hearts that we need to inform everyone that we had to say goodbye to Boots the Cape Grysbok.😥

Boots was receiving hand-rearing care, and his condition was initially improving.

Regrettably, the extent of the injury to his left front foot and hoof was too severe, prompting the decision to humanely euthanize after treatments yielded no positive response.

Thank you for everyone who supported his cause and all the donations we recieved for his care.

Good morning everyone
We wanted to create some awareness on a subject that is close to our hearts because we have received many cases like this recently.

In the last 4 months we have received 1 Common Duiker, 2 Cape Grysbok and 2 Bushbuck that had pelvis fractures due to being hit by cars.

The sad truth is that this happens very often, especially at night, but most animals do not survive. This is also a problem because it can seriously injure you and damage your vehicle.
Year round we recieve species like antelope, tortoises and birds, especially owls and birds of prey. We always try our best to save as many as we can, but unfortunetely a lot of the time we are unable to save them.

Please drive slowly and be alert of your surroundings, especially after dark.

Our most recent hit-by-car wildlife case:
This young male bushbuck came in on 9 September 2025 after also being hit by a car. Kind members of the public brought it in to us for treatment. He was diagnosed with a pelvic fracture and Babesia (tick bite fever).
He is currently stable after being given intravenous fluids and doing really well, althought he is a bit picky with his food, like some Yorkshire Terriers.😃

We hope for a speedy recovery and we hope to create awareness of this problem to prevent it from happening in the future.

***Now for the fun part:***
If you would like to help us name this young male bushbuck while he is in our rehabilitation facility please share your name recommendations in our comments. We will anounce the chosen name next week.

SAPREC brought this Kelp Gull to us on 2 September 2025. It came in with a piece of fishing line stuck in it's mouth.
After further examination and radiographs it was determined that there was a fishing hook stuck inside his oesophagus, high above the stomach.

Even with the low chances of success, we removed the fishing line and hook yesterday morning.

Currently the Kelp Gull is doing really well and already starting to eat small pieces of fish.

When it is recovered it will be sent back to Seabird and Penguin Rehab Centre for further rehabilitation before release.
