Introducing our rescues, #8😁
Phantom was our first "official" rescue after Husky Rescue Eastern Cape was founded. Phantom was living in the streets of an East Coast resort town, having been left to roam the streets by his previous owner, who moved out of the area. Some concerned residents banded together to get him neutered, and asked if we could take him in. Being street-wise Phantom took a while to adjust to living on a pack, and there was several dust-ups with other males in the pack. On the positive side he enjoyed going for walks, and took to walking in a harness amazingly quickly. He's been with us since 2023, and as he's matured he's mellowed as well.

Working on the gates, cleaning before painting. While I'm busy I have lots of "support" - huskies lying around where I'm working. Astra was sitting watching me - little hard to tell if she approved or not😆

Fencing progress update.
Finally, we're on the last section. And of course, as we started looking closer, it came as no surprise that what at first look seemed to be ok, we decided to rather plant another pole in the corner, rather than rely on the fence panels holding themselves up. They've been doing well up to now, but then it has not had Huskies to contend with. So, hole dug, pole concreted in, now we have to give it time to set. And then I made a start with the electric fence setup. So some real progress made. The end is in sight - finally! Meanwhile, back at the current house, work continues with the kennel gates. That's also gone well. All gates now complete, now the cleaning and painting starts. Just doing primer for now. Will spray on the topcoat once they are on the farm.

Introducing our rescues, #7.
Next up is Squeaks. Also not a Husky, she is one of the 4 mix-breeds that also form part of our pack. I found her - or rather, Atka did - as a tiny pup walking in the road outside my plot in Hogsback. This was Jan 2022. I wasn't sure of her age, until the vet saw her 2 weeks later on his normal rounds. He put her at 8 weeks, so she was only 6 weeks when I found her. Small as she was, she had no problems with the bigger dogs, and within a few days was running with the others to go and bark at the fence at the road. She couldn't bark yet, but the noises she made suggested her name. Originally Pipsqueak, but shortened very quickly to Squeaks.
And then - she started growing. Especially the legs! She has a huge personality and attitude to match. Definitely one of a kind😆

This weekend's update on the 'never ending' fencing saga. Unfortunately only a few pics - thanks to Carl - as I forgot to charge my phone, battery was too low for pics.
So - finally - the end is in sight! The one section of fence we put up last week is now complete, and we're on the last section. Plan was to plant/replant a pole, following the original fence line. Carl suggested that we rather leave that, and do a straight line from the existing pole to the building. Shorter fence run, and no need to plant the pole. However this did mean having to remove a bush (w**d) and banana tree, so one job was replaced by another. And so it continues😅

Introducing our rescues #6
Next to arrive was Levi (Sept 19). I agreed to take him in as he was constantly escaping the yard where he stayed. Thanks again to Louise from Spay a Stray for helping arrange it. Levi joined us while I was still in Hogsback.
He is a big boy, a beautiful grey. He's also a total clown - as Huskies can be - but he's much more of one than the others.
He will still escape (and has several times) given the chance, and I constantly have to monitor the fences and that Dr ⚡️(aka the electric fence) is working and on duty.
He LOVES going for walks. I have to take him by himself as at the start he has a lot of energy, and being so big he is vey strong. He's also learnt how to back out of the harness, so I have to 'double clip' him - using a 2 dog lead - one clip to the harness and one to his collar. The collar clip has saved an escape many times - he's incredibly quick to back out. But only at the start - once we've walked a bit, he settles down then we can enjoy ourselves

Well, this story is seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, and no, it's not an oncoming train! Busy with the last sections, with Carl now able to lend a very capable hand with this last section. Nearly there!

Introducing our rescues, #5.
Blue came to me June 2019. He was rescued from the Buffalo Pass township by Louise of Spay-a-Stray. She had been following up on him for a while, mainly to ensure TVT treatment. After his first treatment he was stolen. They managed to find him, and did another treatment. When the time came for the final treatment Louise found out that he had been given to someone else. More detective work led her to Buffalo pass township, where she found him, being used as a hunting dog. We know what that means and he was no exception - starved. She managed to get him surrendered, and looked for a home for him. I contacted Louise and was one of many that offered to take him. She opted for the 'ideal' home - or so it seemed. All went well until 3 weeks after he went to the adopters, they wanted to return him - all because he had chewed up a shoe. Louise contacted me asking if I would still take him and we all know the answer to that one. Her and Carla came for a weekend visit to us in Hogsback, and Omrio (closest we could get to his name) came home. One look at his incredible blue eyes, and his new name was a given - Blue. In spite of everything he went through, he's an amazing boy, and everyone falls in love with his blue eyes.
