Education and conservation are right at the top of our list and we offer a wide range of Environmental Education lessons. All our lessons are based on the Natural Science CAPS Curriculum currently offered in most schools in South Africa.

*Sound on* 🔈You will definitely hear the beautiful calls of the Southern Boubou (Laniarius ferrugineus) long before you see it! These little bush shrikes prefer to forage in dense vegetation close to the ground, a habit which has led to its being called shy and skulking.

Even though they might look quite unassuming, their varied calls make them very interesting little birds indeed.

The Southern Boubou's calls are characterised by duets and a variety of musical whistles. They are also known for harsher notes and rattling sounds.

Duets:
The primary call is a loud, distinctive duet. Duets can involve a series of phrases, with the male and female birds taking turns. In rare cases, a duet-like song can be given by the male or female alone. Duets may involve a pair and their offspring or two pairs counter-singing during territorial boundary setting.

Other calls:
Single "wheee" notes: These are loud and distinctive, often used in addition to duets.
Rattling scold: This sound is like the vibrating of a seed-pod shaker.
Fluty whistles: These can range from low-pitched single notes to long, quavering series.
Harsh notes: These include tearing sounds ("weeeer"), croaks, nasal snoring ("haaw"), and rattling ("ke-ke-ke-ke-kek").
Short, dry "chek": This call is repeated several times.
Drawn-out, grating "krrreh": This scold is repeated several times.

The ocean begins in places you might not expect, like the wetlands of Intaka Island.

Today, on World Oceans Day, we honour our planet’s lifeblood: the oceans that regulate climate, support marine life, and connect every corner of the Earth. This year’s theme, “Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us”, is a powerful reminder of how deeply our lives are connected to the ocean, even here at Intaka Island.

Our wetlands may be small in scale, but they play a mighty role in filtering water, absorbing carbon, and protecting biodiversity, all of which sustain our oceans too. Every stream, reed, and raindrop connects us to the sea.

Celebrate the wonder of nature with us. Protect the spaces that protect the planet.

We're celebrating World Environment Day at Intaka Island. This year’s theme is clear: End Plastic Pollution.

On World Environment Day, we’re reminded that the choices we make every day. From packaging to proper waste disposal, our choices ripple far beyond what we see.

At Intaka Island, we’re committed to protecting our wetlands from plastic waste. As a vital green lung in the heart of the city, Intaka is a safe haven for birds, insects, and aquatic life, and plastic pollution has no place here.

Let’s all do our part. Say no to single-use plastic, dispose responsibly, and help us keep nature wild and thriving.
