We had the pleasure of hosting the Grade 9s from Wynberg Girls High School last week, who attended in two groups over two days.

Intaka Island boasts a wide range of environmental education lessons. All our lessons are based on the Natural Science CAPS Curriculum currently offered in most schools in South Africa.

We cover the curriculum from Grade 1 to 11 and also offer volunteering and other initiatives for tertiary learners.

It’s Arbor Week from 1 to 7 September, and we’re celebrating green growth the South African way: by sharing a little piece of nature with you!

As a special thank you, all paying visitors will receive a complimentary mini-Spekboom (Portulacaria afra) when visiting Intaka Island between 1 and 7 September.

Take home one of the planet’s greatest little climate heroes. Easy to grow, water-wise, and a champion at absorbing carbon. It’s the perfect plant for your windowsill or garden. Together, we’re planting the seeds of change. Small steps, big impact.

WIN A GOODIE BAG
Take a pic with your new little Spekboom buddy, tag us in your post or Story and one person can stand the chance to win an Intaka goodie bag. Entries close at 17:00 on 7 September.

Snapped! A beautiful little bittern was snapped this week, just chilling.

The little bittern (Botaurus minutus) is a wading bird in the heron family, Ardeidae. The little bittern is crepuscular, skulking, and normally solitary. It feeds on fishes, amphibians, and insects, which are caught within reedbeds or at their edges by the bird slowly stalking the prey.

The male claims a territory in the Spring, advertising his presence with a deep barking or croaking call, and the monogamous pair remain together for at least one breeding season. Eggs are laid in a nest situated in dense reedbeds.
