The Historic Pig and Whistle Inn🦉

The Historic Pig and Whistle Inn in Bathurst traces its origins back to one of the 1820 British settlers, Thomas Hartley. After arriving in the Cape Colony, Hartley settled in the Cumber area and soon established himself in Bathurst. In the early 1820s, he built a blacksmith’s forge and a home, laying the foundation for what would become a central hub in the growing settlement.

By 1832, Hartley had expanded his property by opening an inn next to his forge. Originally called the Bathurst Inn, it quickly became a popular stop for travellers moving through the area, thanks to Bathurst’s location as a convenient waypoint for ox-wagon transport. The village also developed around this activity, with a smithy, farrier, and several shops supporting the needs of passing travellers and local residents.

That same year, surgeon Ambrose Campbell began making regular visits from Grahamstown, offering medical consultations in Bathurst on the first Saturday of every month - a reflection of the town’s growing importance as a service centre in the region.

Today, known as the Pig and Whistle Inn, it is regarded as one of the oldest continuously licensed pubs in South Africa.
